Songkran, Thailand’s premier festival, is a vibrant celebration of the Thai New Year featuring a nationwide water extravaganza. Originating in the 13th century with religious practices such as sprinkling water on Buddha statues to symbolize cleansing of the prior year’s misdeeds, the festival has evolved into a lively water battle where everyone, locals and visitors alike, can expect to get drenched.

Eye protection, such as goggles or sunglasses, is also recommended to shield from the water and the ceremonial white paste applied to the cheeks as a blessing.
