The evolution of Songkran

Songkran, Thailand’s premier festival, is a vibrant celebration of the Thai New Year featuring a nationwide water extravaganza. Originating in the 13th century with religious practices such as sprinkling water on Buddha statues to symbolize cleansing of the prior year’s misdeeds, the festival has evolved into a lively water battle where everyone, locals and visitors alike, can expect to get drenched.

While Songkran is a key Buddhist observance in Thailand, it has also become a time for lively festivities. However, it’s important to maintain decorum, especially when visiting temples or sacred sites during the celebrations.

Participating in Songkran involves embracing local customs. Visitors are encouraged to wear a vibrant, floral shirt over their swimsuits as a sign of respect for Thailand’s modesty norms and the festival’s religious origins. Eye protection, such as goggles or sunglasses, is also recommended to shield from the water and the ceremonial white paste applied to the cheeks as a blessing. To protect your phone from water damage, it’s advisable to use a plastic wallet or leave it secured at your accommodation.
