On February 20, a unique marathon will take place on the icy expanse of Pangong Lake, situated near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, to cast a spotlight on the repercussions of climate change affecting the Himalayan glaciers in Ladakh. Marking its second edition, this event will unfold at an impressive elevation of approximately 4,350 meters above sea level. It aims to draw attention to the unique challenges posed by conducting a marathon on a frozen water surface.

The event is a collaborative effort involving the Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh (ASFL), the Tourism Department, and the local Ladakh administration, unified by a commitment to environmental stewardship.

The event’s organizers are keen on executing the marathon with a sustainable footprint, notably by eschewing plastic water bottles and minimizing waste production. They advocate for the unifying power of sports to bridge diverse cultures and beliefs, especially in addressing the overarching challenge of the climate crisis.

Limiting participation to 50 runners ensures the event’s exclusivity, aligning it with other esteemed frozen lake marathons globally, such as the Icebug Frozen Lake Marathon in Norway, known for their adventurous allure. Competing in the chill of winter on the icy surface offers distinct challenges and excitement for participants hailing from both national and international origins.

Recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the World’s Highest Frozen Lake Half Marathon, this event aims to boost winter tourism in Changthang and lead the charge in global sustainability efforts.

This year’s marathon will include both full and half marathon distances on the frozen Pangong Lake, with runners undergoing essential acclimatization in Leh before the race. Safety measures are in place, featuring on-site medical support, hot water stations at every 5 kilometers, and an ambulance ready throughout the event. Competitors are advised to prepare with crucial equipment like head torches, warm jackets, and raincoats for the challenging conditions.

Furthermore, the marathon seeks to raise awareness about climate change’s effects on the fragile Himalayan environment, fostering a culture of sustainability and international collaboration. It positions itself not only as an adventurous event but also as a significant platform for promoting awareness on climate change issues.
