WTM Africa 2025: Transforming the Continent’s Tourism Landscape with a Bold New Vision

WTM Africa 2025 is set to usher in a new era for African tourism, offering a dynamic and innovative format aimed at tackling the industry’s most significant challenges. Taking place from April 9–11 in Cape Town, the reimagined event introduces a series of themed mini-conferences—each designed to spark focused discussions, foster collaboration, and drive meaningful change across the tourism sector.

A Shift Toward Thematic Engagement

Traditionally, tourism events have followed a scattered format, where attendees hop between disjointed panel discussions. WTM Africa 2025 breaks that mold by curating interconnected sessions under unified themes. This new structure empowers delegates to navigate topics through a logical and immersive journey—enabling deeper understanding and more impactful conversations.

“African tourism demands cohesive dialogue to overcome its multifaceted hurdles,” says Megan De Jager, Portfolio Director at RX Africa. “With this new approach, we’re creating environments where real solutions can flourish.”

This format mirrors how professionals retain knowledge best—through context-rich learning, continued engagement, and subject cohesion—moving away from bite-sized commentary toward substantive, actionable insight.

Cape Town: The Hub of Tourism Innovation

Cape Town’s role as host city is no coincidence. With its diverse tourism offerings, robust infrastructure, and cultural vibrancy, the city is the ideal stage for shaping the future of travel in Africa. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis reinforces this, noting tourism’s power to stimulate jobs, infrastructure investment, and economic evolution across the continent.

“These discussions have the potential to influence policies and strategies that catalyze real transformation,” Hill-Lewis said, affirming the city’s commitment to sustainable tourism growth.

Investing in Africa’s Tourism Future

One of the event’s key highlights is the Africa Tourism Investment Conference, taking place on April 10. This summit will gather top-tier investors, financiers, and government leaders to explore the investment needed to unlock the continent’s tourism potential.

Chaired by Wayne Godwin, CEO of JLL Africa, the conference will host experts like Warrick Haskell of Nedbank and Ken Ogwang from the IDC. The goal: bridge the gap between high-impact tourism projects and the capital they need to thrive.

“Strategic investment is the lifeline of African tourism’s growth,” De Jager emphasizes. “This summit brings visionaries and funders together to turn ambition into reality.”

Addressing Aviation Barriers

Travel within and to Africa remains restricted by high costs and limited air connectivity. On April 10, a specialized Aviation Focus session will zero in on these issues. Featuring leaders like AASA’s Aaron Munetsi and FlySafair’s Kirby Gordon, the session will tackle pricing challenges, visa bottlenecks, and infrastructure needs.

The discussion aims to spark collaboration between aviation stakeholders and policymakers, paving the way for more accessible travel across the continent.

Prioritizing Responsible Tourism

Sustainability and ethical tourism practices will take center stage across two half-days of programming led by global responsible tourism expert Dr. Harold Goodwin. Topics include climate resilience, authentic green tourism practices, and eco-positive travel models.

The WTM Africa Responsible Tourism Awards, scheduled for April 10, will spotlight initiatives that champion environmental stewardship and community upliftment. Among the speakers is Grootbos founder Michael Lutzeyer, who will share insights on sustainable models that balance conservation with economic empowerment.

Championing Inclusion in Travel

Diversity and accessibility are central to the travel industry’s future. WTM Africa 2025 will feature keynote speaker Ruth Rathblott, a TEDx presenter and advocate for inclusion, who will share her insights in “Unhide & Seek: Building Inclusion and Belonging in Travel.”

Interactive workshops will focus on developing sensory-inclusive travel experiences and reaching diverse markets, ensuring that the African tourism industry becomes more inclusive and representative of all travelers.

Understanding the Industry’s Pulse

On April 11, the State of the Industry panel, moderated by travel intelligence powerhouse Skift, will present data-driven insights into the current and future landscape of African tourism. Michelle Gounden, Skift’s Director of Insights, will unveil findings from Euromonitor International on emerging trends, traveler behavior, and strategic opportunities for destinations.

Exploring the Rise of Wine Tourism

Wine tourism will take the spotlight on April 11 with a dedicated track exploring its rapid growth and potential for economic upliftment. Experts like Carolyn Martin of Creation Wines and Steyn Fullard of Weltevrede will lead sessions on cultivating tourism around Africa’s wine regions.

Complemented by tasting sessions in a bespoke Wine Activation area, the program highlights how wine tourism can create jobs, boost rural economies, and enhance visitor experiences.

Forging Connections and Business Growth

Networking will be a cornerstone of WTM Africa 2025. With Southern Sun Hotels as the official hospitality partner, the event will feature high-value networking receptions, including an exclusive welcome evening for Hosted Buyers. These gatherings are designed to foster business deals, partnerships, and cross-border collaboration that fuel tourism sector expansion.

A Defining Moment for African Tourism

WTM Africa 2025 is more than just a conference—it’s a strategic platform designed to accelerate the tourism sector’s evolution across the continent. With focused mini-conferences, expert-led sessions, and high-impact networking, the event will provide attendees with actionable tools to tackle real-world challenges.

From sustainable tourism and investment to connectivity, inclusivity, and niche growth sectors like wine tourism, the event is set to shape Africa’s place on the global tourism map. As the industry’s trailblazers converge in Cape Town, WTM Africa 2025 is poised to unlock the continent’s vast potential and chart a new course for tourism excellence in Africa.
