United Airlines is making strategic adjustments to its international flight network, implementing significant route changes that will impact both the European and North American markets. The airline will discontinue its service to Tenerife, Spain, and introduce two new international routes from Denver International Airport (DEN) in late 2025.
Discontinuation of Tenerife Service
United Airlines will terminate its Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Tenerife service as of May 2, 2025. This route, which began in the summer of 2022, was part of the airline’s efforts to expand internationally. Despite operating three times a week with Boeing 757-200 aircraft, the route failed to meet passenger demand. Initially aimed at attracting travelers during the summer peak, the route to Tenerife struggled to generate sufficient traffic. United attempted to adjust by switching to a winter schedule, hoping to appeal to holiday travelers, but this change also failed to increase bookings. As a result, the airline has opted to discontinue the service altogether.
However, United will continue to offer multiple routes to major Spanish cities, such as Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Palma de Mallorca, and Malaga. The airline retains its position as the U.S. carrier with the largest network to Spain, providing numerous options for travelers heading to this sought-after European destination.
Expansion at Denver Hub
While scaling back in Europe, United is intensifying its operations at its Denver hub. On October 26, 2025, the airline will launch two new international routes from Denver International Airport (DEN) to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic (PUJ) and Mexico City, Mexico (MEX), using the Boeing 737 MAX 8 for both routes.
These new services are part of United’s broader strategy to enhance its presence at DEN, where the airline has been working to secure additional gate space and broaden its route network. This expansion offers travelers based in Denver more international travel options, both for leisure and business. United’s move also comes in response to growing competition at DEN, particularly from Southwest Airlines, which holds a significant share of the airport’s traffic. By introducing new international routes, United aims to better capitalize on Denver’s central location, allowing for easier connections to the U.S. and beyond. Additionally, Denver travelers will benefit from a newly upgraded B West lounge, slated to open in late summer 2025, designed to offer a premium experience for frequent flyers.
Scaling Back Tulum Service
Along with changes in Europe, United is also scaling back its service to Tulum, Mexico. The airline will end its Chicago O’Hare (ORD) to Tulum (TQO) route as part of its strategy to reduce services to this emerging international destination. United had previously reduced its service from Los Angeles (LAX) and temporarily suspended flights from Newark (EWR) to Tulum.
Tulum International Airport, which began hosting international flights just over a year ago, has faced challenges in attracting consistent passenger traffic. Other U.S. carriers, such as American Airlines and JetBlue Airways, have similarly reduced or scaled back their services to Tulum. United’s decision to pull back from this market further underscores the airline’s ability to adapt its network based on demand and market conditions.
Strategic Network Adjustments
Despite these reductions, United Airlines remains focused on strengthening its network in high-demand, profitable markets. The decision to cut back service to Tulum reflects the airline’s commitment to reallocating resources to destinations with more consistent demand. The cancellation of the Tenerife route, combined with the launch of new services from Denver, showcases United’s agile approach to network management—cutting underperforming routes while bolstering its presence in growing markets.
These changes demonstrate United Airlines’ capacity to quickly pivot and refine its network, ensuring more efficient operations, better connectivity for passengers, and an enhanced overall travel experience. By making these adjustments, the airline continues to expand in high-demand regions while carefully managing its service offerings to maintain long-term profitability.
