United Airlines Expands Southeast Asia Reach with DOT-Approved Fifth Freedom Flights

United Airlines is charting new territory in its international expansion, having secured the green light from the U.S. Department of Transportation to launch fifth freedom flights that will bridge North America and Southeast Asia. This new authorization allows the carrier to operate flights connecting U.S. hubs with Thailand and Vietnam, via Hong Kong — creating a dynamic travel corridor to two of the region’s most visited cities: Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City.

New Fifth Freedom Services to Launch Fall 2025
Kicking off on October 26, 2025, United will begin offering daily flights from Hong Kong International Airport to both Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City. These services will be fed by flights originating in Los Angeles and San Francisco, significantly enhancing connectivity between the U.S. and Southeast Asia.

Travelers will experience the journey aboard United’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, an aircraft optimized for long-haul comfort and fuel efficiency. The Dreamliner’s 257-seat layout features four cabin classes, including Business, Premium Economy, Economy Plus, and Economy, ensuring a comfortable option for every type of passenger.

This move to exercise fifth freedom rights — allowing a U.S. carrier to carry passengers between foreign countries — signals a bold step in United’s strategy to capture more of the growing Southeast Asian travel market.

Unlocking Access to Southeast Asia’s Most Vital Hubs
The launch comes at a time when demand for travel to Southeast Asia is booming. With Thailand expecting over 40 million international arrivals in 2025, United’s new services tap directly into a red-hot travel market. Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City are not only major tourist destinations but also critical centers for business, trade, and regional connectivity.

The flexibility of these new routes means U.S. travelers can now fly to Hong Kong, then continue onward to either Thailand or Vietnam — or travel between the two Southeast Asian cities. This gives tourists more opportunities for multi-country trips and streamlines business travel in the region.

Strategic Growth in the Asia-Pacific Market
United’s push into Southeast Asia reflects a broader commitment to expanding its international footprint. The airline has been steadily increasing service across the Asia-Pacific region, reinforcing its competitive position among global carriers.

Earlier this year, in April 2025, United announced a groundbreaking route between San Francisco and Adelaide, marking it as the only U.S. airline to fly directly between the U.S. and South Australia. Starting December 11, 2025, that seasonal route will operate three times a week aboard a Boeing 787-9, further deepening United’s reach into the Pacific.

Additionally, United is boosting service to the Philippines, launching a second daily flight between San Francisco and Manila on October 25, 2025. The route will be operated with a Boeing 777-300ER, accommodating up to 350 passengers and offering greater flexibility for travelers.

Eyes on Future Expansion
While fifth freedom services to Thailand and Vietnam are fully approved, some of United’s newly announced routes — including the Adelaide and second Manila service — are pending final regulatory clearance. Still, the airline’s commitment to global expansion is evident.

By offering more direct and creative routes, United aims to capture rising demand from U.S. travelers eager to explore Southeast Asia and the broader Asia-Pacific. The airline’s partnership with Virgin Australia also extends its footprint across Oceania, providing passengers with more domestic and international flight options.

A New Era of Global Travel Access
With new routes to Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Adelaide, and Manila, United Airlines is entering a new phase of international leadership. These additions not only reflect shifting travel trends but also demonstrate United’s long-term vision to connect major economic and cultural centers with seamless service and world-class aircraft.

As tourism and business travel rebound globally, United is positioning itself to be a go-to carrier for those looking to experience the best of Southeast Asia — all with the comfort, convenience, and connectivity of a leading international airline.
