Sustainability Emerges as Key Focus for European Event Planners in ICC Sydney Survey

 Saturday, August 31, 2024

A recent survey by the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney), under the management of ASM Global, reveals that 86% of event organizers from the UK and Europe prioritize sustainability as a key factor in event management when booking international venues.

Geoff Donaghy, CEO of ICC Sydney and Group Director of Convention Centres at ASM Global (APAC), emphasized that these findings highlight the significance of the venue team’s dedication to delivering sustainable events through best practices in corporate social responsibility.

“This client survey builds on the insights from our visitor survey released in February, both of which underscore the growing demand to enhance delegate and attendee experiences through an integrated approach to sustainability, diversity, and inclusion,” Mr. Donaghy stated.

Notably, 88% of respondents consider sustainability, including social impact and equality, as essential in event practices. This aligns with the industry’s increasing commitment to reducing waste, minimizing carbon footprints, and promoting ethical practices.

Key Survey Insights:

ICC Sydney’s commitment to enhancing community engagement, environmental sustainability, and economic development aligns with clients’ efforts toward achieving a net-zero future.

Energy Management at ICC Sydney

In partnership with its Darling Harbour Live collaborators, ICC Sydney secures 20% renewable energy through its energy contract. Combined with the onsite community-owned solar array, 25% of the venue’s power is sourced from renewables.

‘Switch It Off’ Campaign

The venue’s ‘Switch It Off’ campaign promotes environmental awareness by encouraging staff to turn off lights, air conditioning, and electrical devices when not in use, further reducing its energy footprint.

Water Reduction Efforts

In 2023, ICC Sydney diverted 65% of its waste from landfills. Through a collaboration with Sydney Water, the venue installed refill stations, saving over 2.65 million plastic water bottles.

Food Waste Management for Social Impact

Since its opening, ICC Sydney has donated 34.6 tonnes of unserved food, equating to 98,857 meals, along with 24.5 tonnes of goods to local charities, supporting a sustainable circular economy.

Accessible & Inclusive Initiatives

ICC Sydney’s Accessible and Inclusive Events Guide ensures welcoming environments for all, reflecting the venue’s dedication to inclusivity and accessibility.

Mr. Donaghy added, “The industry survey, conducted in partnership with Conference and Incentive Travel among UK and European event professionals, marks a significant shift in attitudes towards sustainability, positioning it as an essential commitment rather than a choice.”

Samantha Glass, ICC Sydney’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Communication, and Sustainability, shared insights on the survey findings: “Looking ahead, the survey indicates a strong imperative for event professionals to enhance communication on sustainability and social impact initiatives—areas where ICC Sydney is well-equipped with infrastructure and internal resources.

“Through our Legacy Program and resources like the Accessible and Inclusive Events Guide and Sustainable Events Guide, we encourage our clients to embrace a sustainable and inclusive future, striving together for a net-zero, nature-positive future that can leave a lasting impact on Sydney well beyond the events themselves,” Ms. Glass concluded.
