Sri Lanka’s strategic move to enhance its footprint in India’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) market reached a culmination with a thoroughly successful roadshow and industry networking reception held on July 3rd, 2025, at TAJ Westend in Bengaluru. It was hosted by Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB) on instruction from Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and was honored by a considerable presence of key Indian MICE planners, corporate travel agents, and industry partners. It was a testament to Sri Lanka’s growing potential as a leading destination for MICE and its deepening tourism relationship with India.
The roadshow was a key part of Sri Lanka’s broader strategy to position itself as a go-to destination for business events. It saw the participation of an impressive delegation from Sri Lanka, including officials from the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau, as well as representatives from 20 leading Destination Management Companies (DMCs), tour operators, hotels, and resorts. This initiative was designed to foster long-term relationships between Sri Lanka and India, further cementing Sri Lanka’s role as a major player in the MICE tourism market.
Strengthening Ties Between Sri Lanka and India
Indian visitors are a vital part of Sri Lanka’s tourism growth story. Between January and May 2025, over 204,000 Indian tourists visited Sri Lanka, a clear indication of India’s importance as a key market for the island nation’s tourism sector. The event at TAJ Westend, Bengaluru, was designed to build on this momentum, leveraging Sri Lanka’s close proximity to India, rich cultural ties, and rapidly growing MICE infrastructure.
“We are keen to integrate India’s thriving economy into Sri Lanka’s growth narrative. With the rise in India’s economic and corporate influence, Sri Lanka stands to gain significantly through collaborations that promote tourism and business exchanges,” said Mrs. Harsha Ruparathne, Actg. Deputy High Commissioner at the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission in Chennai. She emphasized that the roadshow represented a long-term strategy to not only promote Sri Lanka’s leisure tourism but also highlight its emerging role as a leading MICE destination.
Sri Lanka’s Strengths as a MICE Destination
During the event, Sri Lankan officials and tourism stakeholders made it clear that the island’s position as a MICE destination is powered by strong connectivity and cost-effective options for Indian businesses. Mr. Dheera Hettiarachchi, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau, pointed out that Sri Lanka’s proximity to India, combined with a robust infrastructure, makes it an appealing destination for meetings, conferences, incentives, and exhibitions. “India continues to be a top priority market for Sri Lanka’s MICE sector. These roadshows are a significant opportunity to strengthen our collaboration with Indian partners and expand Sri Lanka’s footprint in the Indian MICE market,” Hettiarachchi said.
Sri Lanka’s unique selling point lies not only in its geographic location but also in the variety of facilities and venues it offers, from state-of-the-art convention centers in Colombo to beach resorts and hilltop locations suitable for incentive travel. The country’s highly skilled service providers and destination management companies also play a pivotal role in creating seamless experiences for business travelers.
Growth of MICE Movement from India to Sri Lanka
The event also spotlighted the growing demand for MICE travel between India and Sri Lanka. According to Fawzan Fareid, Regional Manager India, Bangladesh, and Nepal at SriLankan Airlines, MICE movement out of India has become a lucrative market, contributing up to 20% of the total outbound travel from India. “We have seen an over 30% increase in MICE travel from India to Sri Lanka in recent months. The roadshows will play a vital role in bolstering this growth, and we are excited to partner with the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau to double MICE arrivals,” said Fareid.
With SriLankan Airlines offering extensive flight options connecting major Indian cities to Colombo and other key destinations, the airline is perfectly positioned to support the growing demand for business events in Sri Lanka. The increasing air connectivity and ease of travel have been a game-changer for the MICE sector, making Sri Lanka a preferred destination for business travelers from India.
A Resounding Success in Bengaluru
The networking evening at the TAJ Westend hotel proved to be a resounding success, allowing for dynamic one-on-one interactions between Sri Lankan tourism partners and Indian MICE planners, corporate travel specialists, and travel trade partners. Attendees were provided with up-to-date information about Sri Lanka’s state-of-the-art infrastructure developments, incentives for corporate groups, and streamlined travel facilitation processes.
One of the key highlights of the evening was the opportunity for Indian MICE planners to connect directly with Sri Lanka’s tourism providers. Discussions revolved around how Sri Lanka’s tourism sector is adapting to meet the demands of corporate clients while offering unique experiences that blend business with leisure. “The networking evening allowed us to engage in meaningful conversations with key industry stakeholders and gave us a first-hand look at how Sri Lanka is evolving as a MICE destination,” said one Indian MICE planner.
Looking Ahead: A Promising Future for MICE Tourism
This successful roadshow is just one of many initiatives by the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau aimed at strengthening the country’s position in the Indian MICE market. Given the close cultural ties between Sri Lanka and India, coupled with the growing demand for international business events, the island nation is poised to become an even more important hub for MICE tourism in South Asia.
As the world slowly recovers from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indian MICE sector’s upward trajectory presents a wealth of opportunities for Sri Lanka. The country’s well-established tourism infrastructure, paired with its rising status as a world-class business destination, makes it an attractive option for companies seeking a dynamic and cost-effective location for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions.
Above all, Sri Lanka Convention Bureau’s MICE roadshow in Bengaluru ushers in a bright future ahead for Sri Lanka and India in MICE. Besides presenting Sri Lanka’s diverse offerings, the event reiterated, once again, the great importance of cross-border collaboration between two nations with deep historical, cultural, and economic connections. Sri Lanka’s profile as a premier MICE destination is bound to become all the more strengthened as the roadshow makes further headway into India’s key cities.
