Japan’s tourism industry is experiencing a boost with the debut of the Setouchi Triennale 2025, captivating art lovers and travelers alike. Hosted across Kagawa and Okayama prefectures, the event has expanded to include new coastal locations in Kagawa, showcasing nearly 190 pieces of art from a diverse range of local and international artists. Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Seto Inland Sea islands, the festival offers an enriching experience, blending art, history, and culture. The spring session, which launched on April 18, presents visitors with the perfect opportunity to explore the islands via a stunning island-hopping adventure, all while indulging in the area’s unique artistic offerings. The Setouchi Triennale, a highly anticipated contemporary art event held every three years, takes place across the scenic islands and regions of Kagawa and Okayama. This year’s festival has seen significant growth, with a particular focus on integrating Kagawa’s coastal areas into the art journey. The spring edition is a celebration of nearly 190 artworks, reflecting the creative inspiration drawn from the region’s rich cultural and historical heritage. On the opening day, clear skies and pleasant weather set the stage for art enthusiasts, who embarked on an exciting exploration of the islands. The festival’s General Director, Fram Kitagawa, introduced the featured artists at each venue, while a group of trumpet players from Kagawa ushered in the festivities with a memorable fanfare. The opening ceremony also featured a spectacular balloon performance, adding a whimsical touch to the occasion. Festival-goers boarded ferries at Takamatsu Port for an unforgettable journey to Naoshima and Oshima islands, where they were warmly sent off by staff and volunteers. With guidebooks in hand, visitors leisurely explored the numerous artworks displayed across the various venues, immersing themselves in a rich cultural journey. The 107-day event, now in its sixth edition, unfolds in three phases: the spring session runs until May 25, followed by the summer phase from August 1 to August 31, and concluding with the autumn session from October 3 to November 9. The festival spans 17 distinct venues, including the Seto Ohashi Bridge area for the spring phase, Shido-Tsuda and Hiketa for summer, and Utazu in the fall, alongside various islands in the Seto Inland Sea. This year, the festival is reaching new heights, with a total of 256 artworks presented by 218 artists from 37 countries, marking a significant expansion of the event’s international scope. A particular emphasis is being placed on showcasing Asian artists, further solidifying the Setouchi Triennale’s position as a leading cultural event in the region. With its unique fusion of contemporary art and the beauty of Japan’s coastal islands, the Setouchi Triennale 2025 is expected to draw even more visitors, offering an unforgettable cultural experience that highlights Japan’s artistic legacy and innovation.
