Saudi Arabia and wider Middle East destinations registered notable gains in travel and tourism in 2025, with recent reporting showing the region’s sector growing at a faster pace than the global average and contributing significantly to local economies. The World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) latest Economic Impact Research highlights Middle East travel growth reaching 5.3 percent in 2025, compared with 4.1 percent globally, signalling continued momentum in travel demand across multiple regional markets.

In economic terms, the Middle East’s travel and tourism segment contributed approximately $385.8 billion to regional GDP in 2025 and supported around 7.1 million jobs, reinforcing the sector’s role as a major economic engine across countries from the Gulf Cooperation Council to Levant markets.

Saudi Arabia accounted for close to half of this performance, with its travel and tourism GDP expanding by 7.4 percent in 2025—nearly double the global growth rate and well above the regional average. The Kingdom’s tourism economy, valued at about $178 billion in the same period, underlines its growing prominence as both a leisure and business travel destination.

Travel Demand and Visitor Spending Dynamics

Increased international visitor spending played a key role in the Middle East’s sector expansion, rising 5.2 percent across the region, compared with 3.2 percent globally. Within Saudi Arabia, international visitor spending climbed by 8.2 percent in 2025, indicating rising outbound interest and engagement by global travellers.

Business travel emerged as a particularly strong contributor to Saudi Arabia’s tourism performance, with spending in this segment rising by over 55 percent in 2025. This movement reflects the Kingdom’s expanding capacity to host conferences, corporate events and international meetings, bolstering its appeal as a regional hub for business tourism.

Domestic tourism and connectivity improvements also influenced travel demand patterns in the region. Enhanced air links, improved hospitality infrastructure and expanded tourism offerings supported visits to a spectrum of destinations in the Gulf and beyond, from urban centres and cultural attractions to natural landscapes and leisure facilities.

Regional Tourism Performance Beyond Saudi Arabia

Other Middle East destinations recorded steady tourism growth in 2025 alongside Saudi Arabia’s standout performance. The United Arab Emirates’ travel and tourism sector generated an estimated $68.5 billion in GDP, with international visitor spending reaching $56.9 billion. Meanwhile, Jordan and Oman both posted travel and tourism GDP growth of 5.5 percent, with international visitor spending of $8.5 billion and $4.0 billion respectively, pointing to broader regional travel market strength.

This broader performance underscores that while Saudi Arabia remains a central driver in the Middle East market, other destinations continue to reinforce the region’s profile as a dynamic cluster of travel opportunities. From cultural heritage sites and coastal retreats to desert landscapes and business districts, destinations across the Middle East are drawing visitors with diverse interests and travel goals.

Travel Infrastructure and Connectivity

Sustained investment in aviation, hospitality infrastructure and destination development remains a cornerstone of the Middle East’s tourism growth. Improved connectivity through major international airports, expanded hotel capacity and the enhancement of leisure and cultural attractions have helped support both international arrivals and domestic mobility. In particular, Saudi Arabia’s strategic expansion of airports, rail links and tourism precincts has broadened access to new and established destinations within the Kingdom and across the region.

These infrastructure efforts align with broader regional tourism strategies that emphasise high‑value travel, business connectivity and year‑round visitor appeal. Events, exhibitions and festival calendars across the Gulf and Levant markets contribute to making the Middle East a multifaceted travel landscape for both leisure and business visitors.

Visitor Segments and Travel Patterns

Travel patterns in the Middle East show a mix of international leisure tourism, business travel, domestic excursions and cultural visitation. Countries in the region have leveraged their historical heritage, natural landscapes and urban leisure offerings to attract diverse visitor segments, while major events and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) activities have amplified business travel flows.

In addition to leisure and business travel, pilgrimage tourism continues to be a significant component in regional travel flows, particularly to destinations in Saudi Arabia where religious tourism infrastructure and services support large‑scale visitor movements. These flows contribute to the overall vibrancy of the travel market and underscore the varied product offerings within the Middle East tourism portfolio.

Economic and Travel Outlook

While 2025 figures highlight strong growth momentum, external factors such as geopolitical developments may influence travel trends and demand in the short term. However, the underlying travel and tourism fundamentals—strong infrastructure investment, global connectivity and diversified destination offerings—position the Middle East for continued relevance in the global tourism landscape.

As travel professionals, tour operators and destination marketers consider future seasons, the region’s performance in 2025 offers insights into evolving visitor preferences and economic impacts. Saudi Arabia’s role as a key driver in that expansion speaks to its growing appeal as a travel destination, while sustained activity across neighbouring markets points to a broader narrative of regional tourism dynamism in the heart of the Middle East.

Across hubs from the Gulf capitals to historic cities and natural wonders, the Middle East continues to shape global conversations about travel growth and destination appeal, inviting visitors to explore a region that is expanding both in scale and diversity.
