Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden Hosts WFAA’s Family First on June 14 with $5 Admission

Dallas-logo (1)The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden teams up with WFAA/Channel 8′s Family First on Saturday, June 14 to showcase the nationally acclaimed Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden that opened in the fall 2013.


In honor of Family First, admission to the Dallas Arboretum, including the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden, is discounted to $5 per person on that day for tickets purchased at the gate only.


The rate does not include parking; however guests are encouraged to purchase parking online in advance for $5 (subject to availability).

Family First, sponsored by Children’s Medical Center, provides community-focused broadcast content and event-based information to help North Texas families live stronger, safer, healthier and more fulfilling lives.


Stephanie Wilcox, Family First manager and director of community marketing, said, “In its 21st year, the WFAA Family First program is still committed to bringing quality programming and events to the families within our community.


The Dallas Arboretum’s new Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden is the perfect spot to bring fun, educational and affordable family experiences to our viewers.”

Guests can explore the one-of-a-kind scientific Children’s Garden, which includes eight-acres of more than 150 interactive exhibits in 17 indoor and outdoor galleries.


Guests also have an opportunity to meet Arboretum mascots who will make appearances to teach science concepts throughout the garden.

Mary Brinegar, president of the Arboretum said, “We are honored to be part of WFAA’s Family First, and we encourage families to mark their calendars to join us on June 14 at the Children’s Garden, where science and fun become one.”

In addition to the regularly scheduled daily activities, the Arboretum also features a wide variety of engaging activities throughout the garden that are offered exclusively for the Family First event.


WFAA news reporters are scheduled to make appearances and talk about various science topics with experts.

Family First Activities include the following:
Central Market Healthy Cooking Demonstrations
Saturday, June 14, 12 p.m.-2 p.m. – Incredible Edible Garden
Central Market features healthful cooking demonstrations in the Incredible Edible Garden. Recipes are healthy, simple and easy-to-make; such as basil orange juice and summer fruit salad with a fresh twist.

“By using the fresh herbs, we will challenge children and adults to try new, flavorful and healthy food that they may normally not eat,” said Central Market Executive Chef/Dallas Brian Johnson.

“Beyond the Kaleidoscope”
Presented by Dallas Center for Architecture
Saturday, June 14, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. – Kaleidoscope Gallery
Children can gather at the Kaleidoscope gallery in the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden to learn about symmetry, patterns and nature to form unique make-and-take architectural creations.


The weather, kids and abundance of bright colors should make for some great photo opportunities.

Vocal Trash Performance
Saturday, June 14, 2 p.m.-3 p.m. – Entry Plaza
Vocal Trash, a green-minded ensemble composed of singers, drummers, musicians and award-winning break dancers, captivates audiences of all ages with a meaningful and high-energy performance.

Plant Lab Demonstrations: “How Sweet Is It?”
Saturday, June 14, 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. – Exploration Center
Which plants attract bees? At the lab, guests can compare various nectars using a special tool called a refractometer to determine which one is the sweetest. The answer may be surprising.

Nature Puppet Show
Saturday, June 14, 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. – The Glade
Watch a puppet show called “How Stumpy Got His Name.


” The nature puppet shows stars “Stump the Tree” and several animal friends. The play is appropriate for third grade and younger, although all are welcome.
