 Friday, July 4, 2025

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has announced its 25th annual Global Summit will be held in Rome from September 28 to 30, 2025. This is the first time the Global Summit has been held in Italy and marks the first big return to mainland Europe for six years. The three-day Global Summit will be held at the world-famous Auditorium Parco della Musica, the flagship cultural hub of the Eternal City.

A Historic Gathering in the Eternal City

The WTTC Global Summit is the most influential event on the global tourism calendar, bringing together leaders from the public and private sectors to discuss the future of travel and tourism. The 2025 summit is expected to attract ministers, mayors, CEOs, and creative leaders from around the world to shape the future of a sector that continues to prove its power to generate jobs, economic resilience, and global connection.

The Role of Italy’s Tourism Ecosystem in Shaping Global Travel

Italy’s tourism sector is at the forefront of global innovation, and its role in shaping the future of international tourism will be a key feature of the 2025 WTTC Global Summit. As the summit takes place in Rome, one of the world’s most iconic tourist destinations, it provides the perfect platform to showcase Italy’s efforts to integrate sustainability and innovation into its tourism offerings.

Italy’s blue economy, particularly in the realm of sustainable tourism practices along its coasts, will be a central theme. The Mediterranean nation is increasingly looking toward sustainable practices in luxury cruising and yacht tourism, as evidenced by its growing number of eco-friendly marinas and investments in green technology for maritime tourism. This sector not only boosts Italy’s economy but also positions it as a leader in sustainable, high-end travel.

Another emerging sector gaining attention is Italy’s wellness tourism. With an increasing global demand for wellness-oriented travel, Italy is positioning itself as a hub for luxury health retreats, spa tourism, and holistic travel experiences. Regions like Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast offer experiences that blend relaxation, rejuvenation, and the region’s rich cultural heritage, providing a perfect case study for the future of tourism that balances luxury and sustainability.

Additionally, Italy’s rich history in fashion and design will also play a pivotal role in the discussions at the summit. Fashion tourism, where travelers visit Italy to experience its world-renowned fashion houses and cultural landmarks, has been on the rise. From Milan’s Fashion Week to Florence’s leather workshops, Italy continues to captivate tourists with a deep appreciation for art, culture, and style. The summit will delve into how such creative sectors can be integrated into broader tourism strategies, fostering a deeper connection between visitors and local craftsmanship.

The 2025 summit will also likely touch upon Italy’s emerging role in experiential tourism—a growing global trend where travelers seek unique, hands-on experiences that connect them with the local community. This includes culinary tourism, where tourists immerse themselves in Italian cuisine through cooking classes, wine tastings, and farm-to-table experiences. By showcasing its diverse tourism offerings, Italy will demonstrate how traditional sectors like agriculture, food, and artisan crafts can contribute to modern tourism while ensuring cultural preservation.

Focus on Innovation and Sustainability

The 2025 summit will focus on key themes such as digital transformation, regenerative tourism, investment strategies, and the growing role of technology in driving the sector forward. Discussions will also cover urgent developments in the sector, including transport innovation, luxury and fashion travel, and tourism policies for a connected future.

The event will also feature a leadership transition within WTTC. Current Chair Greg O’Hara will hand over the reins to Manfredi Lefebvre, Chairman of Heritage Group and co-chair of luxury travel company Abercrombie & Kent. Lefebvre emphasized the importance of the summit in embracing opportunities for innovation and sustainability in the tourism industry.

Italy’s Role in Shaping Global Tourism

Italy’s rich cultural heritage and modern tourist offerings make it an ideal backdrop for the summit. The country continues to draw the world’s attention with its headline events and the rise of the blue economy, from mega-yachts to sustainable marinas, showing how Italian tourism is embracing the sea as a new frontier for growth.

The summit will provide a global stage to showcase Italy’s leadership in cruising, hospitality, fashion, and wellness tourism. It will also highlight the country’s commitment to sustainability, digital innovation, and experiential tourism.

Looking Ahead

As the world tourism industry continues to recover and grow, the 2025 WTTC Global Summit in Rome will be the moment of change for leaders to come together and exchange ideas, and cooperate in shaping the future of the travel and tourism industry. With the backdrop of Rome, the summit will be the milestone occurrence defining the industry direction for the future years.
