Portland kicked off its cruise season on Thursday, marking the start of an active tourism period that will last until November. This year, the city is set to host 103 cruise ships, welcoming nearly 200,000 passengers to its shores.
The arrival of these ships has a notable impact on local businesses and the economy. In 2024, cruise passengers are expected to contribute around $19 million to Portland’s local economy. For businesses near the waterfront, the cruise season is particularly vital. Some establishments, such as a popular gift shop on Commercial Street, experience a significant increase in foot traffic, with up to 500 extra customers on days when cruise ships dock. This influx not only boosts sales but also elevates the visibility of these businesses.
However, the growing number of visitors is not without its critics. Concerns over overcrowding and the environmental impact of cruise ships have sparked opposition from some community members. A newly-formed group, Portland Cruise Control, is advocating for more attention to the negative effects of the cruise industry. There are also health-related concerns, particularly following reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about increased stomach bug outbreaks on cruises in 2024, which has raised worries among locals about the potential risks posed by large numbers of passengers.
