Philadelphia Hits New Highs in Tourism With International Events And Expanded Air Travel in 2024

Philadelphia experienced a remarkable surge in tourism during the summer of 2024, achieving record-breaking visitor numbers. This boom was fueled by a series of significant events, conventions, and the introduction of new direct international flight routes. The Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB) reported a notable increase in visitors from late May to early September, attributing the rise to expanded convention activities and a growth in international tourists, thanks to new direct flights at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL).

Gregg Caren, President and CEO of PHLCVB, noted that over 1.6 million hotel room nights were booked in central Philadelphia, an 8.2% increase from the previous year, marking the highest summer figures the city has ever seen. The data from Tourism Economics underscored this milestone, emphasizing a significant uptick in hospitality metrics.

Several key events significantly impacted these numbers:

These events not only boosted visitor numbers but also led to extended stays, significantly enhancing hotel revenues and occupancy rates. During these key periods, Philadelphia’s Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR) saw a 51% increase over the previous year.

The rise in international arrivals at PHL, which climbed nearly 7% over the previous summer, mirrored an 8% increase in international visitor spending, which spiked by 27% in the first half of 2024 alone. Visitors are increasingly engaging more deeply with Philadelphia’s rich cultural scene, historic sites, and vibrant arts, contributing to higher expenditure levels.

At the PHLCVB’s Annual Luncheon, Caren lauded the hospitality industry’s role in shaping Philadelphia into a dynamic destination, rich in history and innovation, attractive to both leisure and business visitors. He emphasized the city’s evolution beyond its historical significance, noting its vibrant cultural and innovative scenes.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker highlighted the importance of tourism, conventions, and events in supporting over 80,000 local jobs. She commended the PHLCVB for enhancing Philadelphia’s global reputation, especially in anticipation of major upcoming events like the FIFA World Cup 2026 matches, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, the PGA Championship, and the PMCA Convening Leaders conference in 2026.

American Airlines played a crucial role by launching three new nonstop seasonal routes in 2024 from PHL to Copenhagen, Nice, and Naples, enhancing the city’s international connectivity. These routes are set to return in 2025, alongside additional seasonal flights to Milan and Edinburgh, further boosting Philadelphia’s role as a significant hub for global travel.

Philadelphia is poised for continued growth in its tourism sector, with ongoing investments in infrastructure and a calendar filled with high-profile international events. The city offers a diverse range of attractions, from historical landmarks to sports and innovation, ensuring its place as a leading global tourism destination as it approaches significant events in 2026.
