Royal Caribbean is making waves in California with the arrival of Ovation of the Seas in Los Angeles, ushering in a new era for cruise enthusiasts eager to explore the Mexican Riviera in style. This marks the ship’s inaugural season sailing from the Golden State, and at 168,666 gross registered tons, Ovation now holds the distinction of being the largest vessel ever to depart from a California port.
After a brief 3-night preview sailing for media and travel partners, Ovation of the Seas launched its full itinerary lineup, starting with a voyage to Ensenada. The ship’s next journey, departing June 6, will take guests on a 5-night adventure to the sun-drenched shores of Cabo San Lucas—famous for its dramatic coastlines, luxury resorts, and electric nightlife. With its mix of short escapes and extended getaways, Ovation’s California deployment offers a fresh and luxurious way to experience Mexico’s most iconic destinations.
Previously, Navigator of the Seas held the title as the largest Royal Caribbean ship sailing from Los Angeles. With Ovation’s arrival, however, the cruise line has significantly elevated its West Coast offerings. Though Ovation will only call LA home through September, its presence marks a strategic step forward for Royal Caribbean as it ramps up investment and deployment along the Pacific coast.
During its California stint, Ovation of the Seas will offer cruises lasting 3 to 6 nights, with select sailings featuring overnight stays in Cabo San Lucas. These longer port calls offer cruisers more time to soak in the city’s charm—whether that’s through water sports, dining, or enjoying the vibrant marina. The extended schedule makes these itineraries especially appealing to travelers seeking both cultural discovery and luxurious downtime.
Looking beyond Ovation’s departure, Royal Caribbean has no intention of retreating from the region. Quantum of the Seas will take the baton and continue operations out of Los Angeles through September 2026, ensuring the brand maintains a strong West Coast footprint. In a global game of ship swaps, Ovation will return in 2026 to relieve Quantum, which will then reposition to Sydney, Australia.
Meanwhile, Navigator of the Seas will continue its successful Baja and Mexican Riviera routes until its anticipated redeployment to Asia in late 2026. To further boost its California presence, Royal Caribbean plans to introduce Serenade of the Seas to San Diego starting in 2026. The ship will offer flexible options, including 2-night sailings to Ensenada, mid-length Baja cruises, and 7-night Mexican Riviera adventures—giving guests more choices for homeport departures and trip durations.
Although not the largest in the fleet, Ovation of the Seas is a next-generation vessel from Royal Caribbean’s groundbreaking Quantum Class. Launched in 2016, the ship integrates smart technology, innovative entertainment, and elevated luxury in a way that redefines cruising. Among its standout features are the North Star observation capsule, a skydiving simulator, an indoor sports arena with bumper cars, and immersive entertainment venues that set a new standard for onboard experiences.
Ovation is also a leap forward in terms of size and amenities compared to Navigator of the Seas. With a 28,000 GRT advantage and 14 years of design evolution, Ovation delivers a more modern and expansive cruising environment. Guests can enjoy larger staterooms, smarter tech, and more diverse dining and entertainment options throughout the ship.
For those seeking exclusive luxury, the ship’s Royal Suite Class offers a curated premium experience that includes private dining, the attentive Royal Genie butler service, and an exclusive sun deck for suite guests. These elevated perks create a boutique resort feel onboard—a sharp contrast to older ships, and an ideal match for travelers who prioritize comfort, exclusivity, and convenience.
Designed with versatility in mind, Ovation of the Seas caters to all types of guests. Families will find an abundance of activities, from surf simulators to kid-friendly dining, while couples and solo travelers can unwind in adults-only areas, spa retreats, and sophisticated lounges. Whether your ideal vacation involves non-stop thrills or peaceful ocean views, Ovation delivers on every front.
As Ovation of the Seas begins her first season sailing from Los Angeles, she not only offers an enhanced cruise experience but also signals Royal Caribbean’s commitment to expanding luxury travel options along the West Coast. With Quantum and Serenade of the Seas set to follow in her wake, cruisers can look forward to even more unforgettable adventures departing from California in the years ahead.
Whether it’s soaking up the sunshine in Cabo, enjoying the scenic beauty of Baja, or simply indulging in Ovation’s cutting-edge amenities, this new chapter promises a bold and beautiful future for Royal Caribbean and its guests on the Pacific frontier.
