Norway Invites Travelers To Experience Peak Northern Lights Season with Exclusive Viewing Chairs

Visit Norway Invites Travelers to Experience the Northern Lights with Special Viewing Chairs

As the prime season for witnessing the northern lights kicks off, Visit Norway encourages travelers to experience this awe-inspiring natural display. Enhancing this memorable adventure, a product designer from Bodø has created specially crafted chairs for aurora viewing, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in what many call “The Greatest Light Show on Earth.”

“These seats are designed so that more people can experience the northern lights just as I have all my life. Now is the time to see this wonder for yourself”, says Sander Kommedahl, local product designer.

These unique viewing seats are available at Ausvika Beach, a short 10-minute drive from Bodø, and are open to the public, welcoming anyone eager to witness the northern lights dance across the sky.

“I wanted to create something that not only showcases the beauty of the northern lights but also reflects the warmth and hospitality of our region. These seats are designed to be inviting, and offer the comfort of sitting back, relaxing and enjoying the best view of the Aurora”, says Kommedahl.

The Solar Maximum Phase Begins

This is an excellent time to plan a trip to Norway, as the northern lights are currently in a heightened activity phase, known as the Solar Maximum. Part of the sun’s 11-year cycle, this period will continue through 2026, bringing more frequent and intense auroral displays. Northern Norway, with its clear, dark skies and minimal light pollution, remains one of the best places globally to view this natural wonder.

“The activity of the sun controls the activity of the northern lights. Right now, the sun is approaching a new solar maximum – when there is more activity than usual”, says Pål Brekke, solar physicist and Head of Space Research at the Norwegian Space Agency.

Making the Most of Your Aurora Experience

Preparation is essential to maximize your northern lights adventure. The viewing season runs from late September to late March, giving ample chances to catch this stunning phenomenon. To improve visibility, check weather forecasts for clear skies and avoid cloudy nights. Choose locations at least 150 meters away from artificial light sources and direct your gaze northward for the optimal view. Dress in warm layers, as northern lights watching can be a waiting game, and bring a low-light camera to capture the spectacle. With these tips, you’re set to make your northern lights experience unforgettable.
