The 2025 Ningbo Spring Festival Gala, held on January 23, mesmerized audiences with its captivating fusion of tradition and modernity. Broadcast live from Studio One at the Ningbo Radio and Television Group, the event was a tribute to the city’s rich cultural history and dynamic growth, enchanting viewers from near and far with its diverse array of performances.
The gala featured an impressive lineup of original acts that underscored Ningbo’s cultural significance and timeless appeal. Notable performances included the symphonic recitation Seeing You Through Words, the elegant fashion show Oriental Splendor, and the breathtaking At the Heart of the Sea, each celebrating the artistic, literary, and coastal heritage of the city.
Celebrating Ningbo’s Cultural Essence The gala intricately wove together the region’s iconic cultural symbols, from the ancient Tianyi Pavilion to the Hemudu Culture and the exquisite Yue Celadon pottery. The performance Rhythm of Water, a reimagined classic, blended age-old traditions with a contemporary twist. A highlight was the male group dance Moonlight Shines Over the Siming Mountain, which drew inspiration from the philosophies of historic figures like Wang Anshi and Wang Yangming. Dressed as scholars, the dancers embodied the spirit of intellectual vigor and patriotism, executing graceful and purposeful movements.
Technological Marvels on Display The event made full use of state-of-the-art digital technology, offering an immersive spectacle. The female group dance Like a Lotus transported viewers to a dreamlike world, integrating surround-screen visuals, mechanical stages, wirework, and virtual effects. The lotus flowers seemed to bloom and shift, their roots and stems moving in hypnotic harmony.
Innovation also took center stage with the introduction of AI-powered performers. Robots and robotic dogs showcased intricate choreography, interacting with the audience in a mesmerizing blend of mechanical precision and charm, adding a futuristic touch to the traditional festivities.
A Global Tribute to Culture Reflecting Ningbo’s international flair as a coastal city, the gala featured participation from foreign residents and international students. Dressed in elaborate costumes, they joined local artists in performances of Chinese opera, showcasing its enduring appeal. Sime Nkemeni Darrin from Cameroon portrayed the upright Baogong in Henan Opera, while Haines Phoebe Georgina from the UK performed as the imperial concubine Yang Yuhuan in Ode to Pear Blossom from Peking Opera. Nweke Chioma Precious from Nigeria offered an excerpt from the Huangmei Opera Emperor’s Female Son-in-Law.
An Austrian collaboration further enriched the evening, as musicians worked with local artist Robert to perform a piece inspired by the Chinese poem Zi Jin from the Book of Songs. This blending of Western string instruments with traditional Chinese poetry highlighted the beauty of cross-cultural harmony.
Honoring Ningbo’s Spirit of Innovation One of the most poignant moments of the evening was the segment At the Heart of the Sea, which honored the workers constructing the Hangzhou Bay Railway Bridge. Part of the Nantong-Suzhou-Jiaxing-Ningbo High-speed Railway, this engineering marvel is set to become the world’s longest cross-sea railway bridge. Their contribution symbolizes the ingenuity and determination that define Ningbo.
A Growing Tradition Now in its third year, the Ningbo Spring Festival Gala has become an essential part of the city’s pre-Chinese New Year festivities. Beyond showcasing Ningbo’s cultural richness, it fosters unity, community pride, and a sense of shared identity.
