ttfToday’s confirmation of a new parallel runway for Brisbane Airport holds huge potential for Queensland’s visitor economy, according to peak national industry body Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).

Acting Prime Minister Warren Truss has today announced the contract for the next stage of the runway’s construction at Brisbane Airport.

TTF Chief Executive Ken Morrison said Brisbane Airport is one of Australia’s four major international tourism gateways and needs a new runway to meet increasing demand.
“Brisbane has been the fastest growing airport in Australia since privatisation in 1997, with international passenger numbers up 71 per cent over the last decade,” said Mr Morrison.

“Once completed in 2020, the new runway will deliver the additional capacity Brisbane Airport needs to meet current and future demand in and out of Brisbane.

“The economic benefit of the project is estimated to reach $5 billion per year by 2035.
“Today’s announcement provides certainty for the tourism industry and the broader Queensland economy, ensuring Brisbane Airport can cater for leisure and business travel demand well into the future.

“Tourism already directly employs more than 136,000 Queenslanders and generates more than $27 billion in expenditure throughout the state and the additional runway at Brisbane Airport will support the further growth of Queensland’s visitor economy.

“Tourism is an economic development strategy for Australia and this investment by Brisbane Airport will help to underpin the sector’s continuing growth.

“The new runway will also play an important role in mitigating aircraft noise by allowing more take-offs and landings over the water, particularly at night.

“This will help to reduce the impact of aircraft noise on residents around the airport.”
