New Museum of the Second World War in Gdansk

Muzeum-300x252New Museum of the Second World War will be open in Gdansk in 2015. Museum will play educational, cultural and scientific role.




Design of the building of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk was chosen in the international architectural competition. The jury announced the results of the competition on 1 September 2010. The first prize was awarded to the “Kwadrat” architectural team based in Gdynia.





One of the biggest historic exhibition in the world

The building will have about 23,000 square metres of floor area, of which the space reserved for the permanent exhibition will exceed 7,000 square metres. This exhibition will use the most modern methods to present the Second World War from the perspective of big-power politics but, primarily, through the fates of ordinary people. Apart from the main exhibition space, 1,000 square metres will be devoted to temporary shows. There will be also auditorium for 300 pax and cinema room for 115 pax. At the top level of the buidling there will be café and restaurant with the view of the Gdansk.




Mission of the Museum

The mission of the museum is to be a modern institution, where history  of the Second World War will be presented from many perspectives. On 1 September 2012, Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Minister of Culture and National Heritage Bogdan Zdrojewski, Gdańsk Mayor Paweł Adamowicz, Head of the Prime Minister’s Office Tomasz Arabski and Director of the Museum of the Second World War Professor Paweł Machcewicz conducted the ceremony of setting the foundation stone of the museum building.
