India has marked a major milestone on its journey to becoming a global cruise tourism powerhouse with the launch of the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT). Developed at a cost of ₹556 crore, the cutting-edge facility is designed to accommodate up to 10,000 passengers per day, offering world-class amenities with a strong focus on sustainability. Built under a public-private partnership model, MICT is a key pillar of the country’s broader ‘Cruise India Mission,’ aimed at accelerating economic growth through the promotion of cruise tourism.

On April 21, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal officially inaugurated the MICT at Ballard Pier in Mumbai, signaling a major leap forward in India’s ambitions to establish itself as a premier global cruise destination. The ₹556 crore project stands as the most significant investment in India’s cruise infrastructure to date.

Now the largest cruise terminal in the country, MICT is poised to handle a million passengers annually, with the capacity to berth five cruise ships of up to 300 meters each at the same time. The terminal features international-standard immigration services, expansive waiting areas, retail outlets, and seamless digital systems to ensure efficient passenger movement and an enhanced travel experience.

The terminal’s development is the result of a successful public-private collaboration between the Mumbai Port Authority, JM Baxi & Co., and Ballard Pier Port Pvt Ltd. Beyond improving passenger services, MICT plays an integral role in advancing the Indian government’s larger vision through the “Cruise India Mission” and the Sagarmala initiative, which emphasizes port-driven economic development.

Sustainability is a core feature of MICT’s design. The terminal incorporates energy-efficient systems and eco-friendly infrastructure, establishing new standards for green port development in India. It aims to minimize environmental impact while delivering superior service to international and domestic travelers alike.

Complementing the launch of the new cruise terminal, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways also announced an additional ₹5,700 crore investment into maritime infrastructure at the upcoming Vadhavan Port. This project will enhance India’s capacity for bulk, liquid, and container cargo handling, further strengthening the country’s maritime economy.

With the opening of the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal, India is set to attract a greater number of global cruise operators, significantly boosting its presence in the Asia-Pacific coastal tourism sector. MICT is expected to revolutionize the cruising experience for passengers and serve as a catalyst for long-term growth in India’s cruise tourism industry.
