Indonesia’s aviation sector reached new heights during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr season, with InJourney Airports handling an impressive 4.41 million passengers and 33,099 flights between March 13 and 21. This surge in air travel highlights the growing demand for flights during the holiday rush as millions of Indonesians travel across the archipelago to celebrate Eid with family and loved ones. The remarkable increase in both passenger numbers and flights also underscores Indonesia’s expanding air transport infrastructure, alongside successful collaboration between airlines and airport operators to ensure smooth and efficient travel.

The Surge in Passenger Traffic and Flights

The 2026 Eid season saw a 3.7% increase in passenger traffic compared to the previous year, with 4.41 million passengers passing through 37 InJourney Airports, including major hubs like Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang and I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali. The busiest day during this period was March 18 (D-2 of Eid), when the airports saw a peak of 568,964 passengers, followed by 397,670 passengers on the day of Eid itself (March 21). This massive influx of travelers demonstrates the vital role of air travel in connecting families during one of the most significant cultural celebrations in Indonesia.

The surge in passengers was accompanied by an increase in flight activity, with a total of 33,099 flights operated over the same period. This marks a 6% increase compared to the 31,240 flights during the same timeframe in 2025, reflecting the growing demand for air travel during peak holiday periods. As a result, airlines and airports had to carefully manage schedules and optimize slot times to accommodate the large volume of flights and passengers.

Optimizing Airport Operations and Ensuring Smooth Travel

The smooth running of operations during this high-traffic period was the result of meticulous planning and coordination among airlines, airport authorities, and various stakeholders. One of the key strategies to manage the surge was the optimization of slot times, which allowed for greater flexibility and efficiency in handling the increased volume of air traffic. By adjusting the allocated time frames for aircraft takeoffs and landings, airports could ensure a more efficient flow of operations and reduce delays.

Furthermore, airlines received about 2,500 requests for additional flights during the peak season. Out of these requests, approximately 2,000 additional flights were successfully arranged, which is a notable achievement considering that airlines usually only fulfill 60-70% of such requests. This success highlights the strong collaboration between airlines, airports, and the relevant authorities, enabling the aviation sector to accommodate the increased demand and provide travelers with more options during the busy holiday period.

Busy Airports and Popular Destinations

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang was the busiest airport in the InJourney network during the Eid season, handling a staggering 1.51 million passengers. This airport serves as the primary gateway for travelers heading to Jakarta, Indonesia’s bustling capital, and is an essential hub for both domestic and international flights. Other notable airports that saw significant passenger numbers during this period included I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, which recorded 523,944 passengers, and Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, with 378,056 passengers.

Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport remains a key destination for domestic and international tourists, especially during the Eid holiday, when many Indonesians return to the island to celebrate with family. Surabaya’s Juanda International Airport also saw a substantial increase in traffic, reflecting the importance of air travel to Indonesia’s secondary cities, which are key to the nation’s vibrant tourism industry.

Other airports such as Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar, with 283,099 passengers, and Kualanamu International Airport in Deli Serdang, with 207,661 passengers, also saw significant increases in passenger movements. These numbers reflect the ongoing growth in demand for travel to key regional destinations across Indonesia during peak holiday periods.
