Athens is taking all this confidently in its stride, and looking ahead to a post-pandemic era, as it transforms the famed Taekwondo Olympic Stadium in Palaio Faliro into a new world class Metropolitan Conference, Exhibition and Concert Centre. This major regeneration project is poised to re-establish the city as one of the world’s best destinations for Meetings, Incentives, Conferencing Exhibitions (MICE).
Athens has been somewhere these past few years, trying to find its footing in the lucrative international MICE industry. The announcement to repurpose the Mandeville Centre – constructed for the 2004 Olympics – and transform it into a contemporary business events centre is a major breakthrough, achieving an enduring requirement that was identified by industry professionals and event organisers.
MICE business is an important driver of the economy bringing higher spend per head quality visitors, spending significant money on local hospitality, retail and the travel industries. Athens has long been lacking the facilities and infrastructure required to host international conferences of that size, and conference tourism has instead been a missed opportunity for large revenues that have been picked up by other European cities like Barcelona, Berlin or Paris instead.
Major stakeholders, such as the Athens-Attica & Argosaronic Hotel Association and the Hellenic Association of Professional Congress Organizers & Destination Events Specialists (HAPCO & DES), have embraced the initiative with open arms. Industry experts expect the makeover will make Athens much more competitive and help the capital attract more high-value events, as well as corporate conferences.
“It will be a good reason to boost Athens’ MICE market and establish it as an all-year-round destination,” said Athens-Attica & Argosaronic Hotel Association President Evgenios Vassilikos of the redevelopments. ‘According to Vassilikos, Athens and Attica will gain significantly from the new conference centre, taking advantage of a gap by attracting some thousands of international delegates every year.
HAPCO & DES Antonia Alexandrou also stressed how crucial the establishment of the new plant is. She added that the conversion is a landmark for MICE professionals, with the new sky-rise development set to take Athens to the next level of international business event destination under the AC brand.
The redevelopment stadium, the spokesperson explained, will also complement the existing and planned cultural and tourism projects providing visitors with a coordinated and cohesive experience. The stadium is situated within close proximiry to other significant complexes in Athens such as the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, the vast Ellinikon development and the planned Aenaon Metropolitan Park.
Taken together, these ongoing projects form part of Athens’ promise to become a multifunctional destination where business events meet cultural, recreational and leisure activities. This consolidated strategy is more compelling to international event organisers who want to provide delegates with more than just a conference within the one venue.
Economic impact Business conventions and meetings usually have major economic impacts on the cities in which they are hosted. The MICE guests often stay on in the destination for holiday, than is additional beneficial to the local economy. Hoteliers and business owners in Athens predict new bookings, a bump in visitor expenditures and higher year-round occupancy from the added arrival of international business travelers.
In addition, better business tourism facilities may result in additional investment in wider facilities and public transport infrastructure, not only for business visitors but also for leisure tourists.
More broadly, general tourism in Athens is also likely to benefit from this that will now also serve as an enhancing project. Once upgraded it will provide the city with the opportunity to hold international cultural events, exhibitions and concerts, for the benefit of residents and visitors. Tourists coming to Athens will enjoy modernized venues and facilities that will enhance their trips and entice them to return.
