mtcc-300x111The Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) will host nearly 6,000 public works professionals from North America and other countries for the American Public Works Association’s annual International Public Works Congress and Exposition held August 17 to 20.

The APWA Sustainability Congress will be co-located at MTCC, bringing environmental issues to the forefront by covering the latest in sustainability practices. By securing the APWA congress, MTCC is expected to generate more than $17 million for the local economy.

“Toronto was selected for two reasons,” said Executive Director Peter B. King of the APWA. “The first was the enthusiastic support we received from the Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA), the local chapter of APWA; the second reason was Toronto’s reputation as a world class destination known for its diversity and hospitality.” Members will be attending from 14 countries including: Australia, Chile, Japan and the United States, and Canadian members are expected to comprise approximately 25 percent of the attendance.

In addition, the MTCC was specifically selected because of its ability to accommodate the 90,000 square feet of exhibit space needed for exhibitors to display the latest public works technology and products from nearly 400 companies. And, with nearly 6,000 people in attendance, MTCC’s large, flexible ballroom can also comfortably host the general sessions with keynote speakers each day. Presenters include:

· August 17:Jennifer Keesmat, Toronto’s Chief Urban Planner, will share her views about urban livability and resiliency;
· August 18: Chris Hadfield, Former Commander of the International Space Station and University of Waterloo professor, will share his experience as an astronaut in the social media era;
· August 18: Peter Braid, Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Communities and Member of Parliament for Kitchener-Waterloo,will be the keynote presenter at the CPWA Luncheon, highlighting the new 10-Year Build Canada Infrastructure Plan and Canada’s ability to remain an infrastructure leader in an increasingly competitive world;

· August 20: Alex Steffen,Planetary Futurist, Best-selling author and TED talk presenter has the ability to connect planetary thinking to today’s most practical concerns. Steffen helps audiences understand the role of world-changing ideas and trends.

“Sustainability is an important urban issue, one that is consistent with MTCC’s own corporate imperatives,” said Barry Smith, president and CEO of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. “We look forward to hosting members of the American Public Works Association and its Canadian and provincial chapters – the CPWA and OPWA – as they advance education and best practices in this area.”
