Knaresborough is preparing for one of its biggest festive weekends of the year as the Knaresborough Christmas Market returns on 5 and 6 December 2026. The historic North Yorkshire market town will centre its celebrations around the Market Place, with independent traders, seasonal food, entertainment and Christmas activities spread across the surrounding streets.

The market will operate from 10am to 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday, giving visitors a full weekend to explore the stalls and the wider town. The official event organisers say the market is centred on the historic Market Place, while independent shops, eateries and additional festive attractions extend the experience beyond the main square.

A Christmas Weekend Built Around the Historic Market Place

Knaresborough already has a long-established market tradition. North Yorkshire Council lists the town’s regular market as taking place every Wednesday throughout the year, apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

For the Christmas weekend, that familiar setting takes on a seasonal identity. The Market Place and surrounding lanes are expected to fill with stalls selling gifts, seasonal products and locally sourced goods, while independent retailers around the centre provide additional opportunities for Christmas shopping.

The event organisers describe the weekend as a chance to explore not only the market itself but also the town’s shops, cafés, restaurants, galleries and historic streets.

Festive Shopping Extends Beyond the Main Stalls

One of the attractions of Knaresborough’s Christmas weekend is that visitors do not need to remain inside the market footprint.

The surrounding Castlegate area, Green Dragon Yard and other independent shopping streets offer additional places to browse. Visitors can also walk towards the historic castle ruins for views across the River Nidd and the famous Knaresborough Viaduct.

The official market programme also points visitors towards St John’s Church, where a Christmas Tree Festival featuring more than 70 decorated trees is scheduled as part of the wider weekend experience.

That combination gives the event a broader destination appeal. Visitors can spend time at the market, then continue through the historic town centre rather than treating the Christmas market as a standalone attraction.

Live Entertainment and a Firework Finale

Entertainment will run throughout the weekend in the Market Place, with performances from local artists scheduled across both days.

Sunday will provide a particularly strong finish. A firework finale is scheduled for 4.30pm on 6 December, with the display visible from viewpoints around the castle and riverside, including areas overlooking the Viaduct.

The organisers advise visitors to consider the riverside and Castle Top when choosing a viewing position. The fireworks are expected to last around 10 to 15 minutes.

For families, couples and visitors making a winter day trip, the combination of daytime shopping and an evening-style finale creates a natural reason to stay in town for much of Sunday.

2026 Trader Planning Is Already Underway

The 2026 edition is also moving ahead with detailed arrangements for traders. The official market information confirms that applications are open and that stall numbers are limited.

Organisers say premium gold stalls have already sold out, while silver and bronze positions remain available. Traders applying for stalls are required to provide documentation including a completed risk assessment and public liability insurance, with product photographs also accepted as part of the application.

Hot food vendors are being handled separately. The organisers state that applications for hot food pitches are not being accepted through the standard application route and that these spaces will be offered by invitation.

This means the market’s 2026 planning is already moving beyond a simple date announcement, with trader selection, stall allocation, safety documentation and event logistics forming part of preparations.

What Visitors Need to Know About Access

Knaresborough is well connected to the wider Yorkshire region, making the Christmas weekend suitable for day trips from nearby towns and cities.

The event organisers say the town is less than five miles from the A1 and has regular rail connections with Leeds and York. Leeds services are listed as running every 30 minutes, while York services operate hourly. Regular buses also connect Knaresborough with Harrogate and other nearby destinations.

Road access will be affected by closures around the Market Square. A free Park and Ride service will operate from GSPK car park on Manse Lane to Chapel Street beside the Market Square throughout the weekend. Paid parking will also be available at Chapel Street, Fisher Street and York Place, although spaces close to the centre are expected to be limited.

Visitors using wheelchairs or pushchairs can use the Park and Ride buses, which the organisers describe as single-decker services with standard accessibility.

A Festive Weekend Across Knaresborough

The 2026 Knaresborough Christmas Market is shaping up as more than a shopping event. Its historic setting, independent businesses, Christmas Tree Festival, live entertainment and Sunday fireworks give visitors several reasons to explore the town beyond the main market stalls.

With the event confirmed for Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December 2026, travellers planning a North Yorkshire Christmas break can build the market into a wider itinerary covering Knaresborough’s castle, riverside, independent shops and surrounding Yorkshire attractions.

For traders, preparations are already underway, while visitors can expect the Market Place to become the focal point of Knaresborough’s festive calendar when December arrives.
