JetBlue Flight Encounters Critical Fuel Shortage Following Multiple Go-Arounds at JFK Airport
On April 12, 2025, JetBlue Airways Flight B61060, en route from Kingston, Jamaica (KIN) to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), encountered a tense situation when air traffic control complications led to multiple go-arounds. As the aircraft neared JFK, the flight crew declared a “minimum fuel” status, signaling an urgent need to land due to dwindling fuel reserves.
Complicated Arrival Process
The Airbus A321, operating Flight B61060, took off from Norman Manley International Airport at 09:53 EST, with an estimated flight time of four hours. However, the flight faced delays, ultimately arriving at JFK at 02:47 EDT, 35 minutes behind schedule, making the total flight duration 4 hours and 16 minutes.
Approaching JFK, air traffic control instructed the aircraft to perform two go-arounds due to congestion in the landing sequence. As delays mounted, the flight crew expressed frustration, noting that the second go-around was exacerbating their fuel shortage. Despite the increasing pressure, air traffic control remained calm and continued guiding the aircraft toward its final approach.
In communication with air traffic control, the flight crew voiced their concern about the low fuel levels, and the pilot offered an apology for the frustration caused. In return, the air traffic controller reassured the crew with a calm and understanding tone.
Remaining Calm Under Pressure
Throughout the challenging situation, both the flight crew and air traffic controllers kept their composure. While the “minimum fuel” declaration is not considered an emergency, it is a signal for the need to expedite landing due to low fuel. Thanks to clear communication and effective coordination, the aircraft safely landed at JFK, with no injuries reported to passengers or crew.
JetBlue has not yet provided an official statement regarding the incident.
Navigating the Balance Between Air Traffic and Fuel Management
This incident highlights the intricate balance required between efficient air traffic control and careful fuel management, particularly during high-traffic periods. The successful exchange between the flight crew and air traffic control helped to mitigate further complications, ensuring the flight landed safely without additional delays.
A Similar Incident Involving Delta Airlines
Just days earlier, on April 7, 2025, Delta Air Lines Flight DL576 experienced its own emergency. Shortly after departing Mexico City en route to Atlanta, a pressurization issue emerged, preventing the Boeing 737-800 from climbing above 10,000 feet, creating a critical safety scenario.
As the pilots worked to stabilize the aircraft, communication with air traffic controllers became tense. With high elevation complicating matters, controllers were eager to bring the aircraft back to the airport, while the pilots required extra time to ensure the aircraft’s safety before making any return decisions.
Both events emphasize the complexities of managing critical flight situations and underscore the importance of clear and professional communication between flight crews and air traffic control to ensure the safety of all passengers.
Both JetBlue and Delta Airlines continue to uphold strong safety records, with no injuries reported on either flight.
