Japan’s tourism industry is set to soar with the debut of the Setouchi Triennale 2025, a highly anticipated cultural event that will captivate art lovers and travelers alike. This year’s festival, spanning Kagawa and Okayama prefectures, has expanded to coastal locations in Kagawa, presenting an impressive collection of nearly 190 works by both local and international artists. The festival offers a dynamic fusion of contemporary art, history, and local culture across the picturesque islands of the Seto Inland Sea. With perfect spring weather, the event promises an unforgettable island-hopping experience that immerses visitors in the region’s rich heritage.
Launching on April 18, the spring session marks the opening of the sixth edition of the Setouchi Triennale, a celebrated contemporary art festival held every three years. The event showcases nearly 190 artworks, inspired by the area’s cultural and historical significance. This year, the exhibition has been extended to include new coastal areas in Kagawa, drawing even more visitors to the festival’s scenic venues.
Opening day brought clear skies and a festive atmosphere, with art enthusiasts embarking on island-hopping excursions to venues such as Naoshima and Oshima islands. Fram Kitagawa, the festival’s General Director, welcomed attendees, guiding them through the various exhibitions while trumpet players from Kagawa set the mood with a fanfare. A unique balloon performance further heightened the opening day experience.
The 107-day festival is structured into three sessions, beginning with the spring phase, running until May 25. The summer session will follow from August 1 to August 31, and the fall session will conclude from October 3 to November 9. This year’s expanded festival includes 17 venues, such as the Seto Ohashi Bridge, and showcases art across multiple islands, including the bustling summer sessions in Shido-Tsuda and Hiketa, and the autumn events in Utazu.
With over 256 artworks created by 218 artists from 37 countries, the Setouchi Triennale 2025 is growing in scope and influence. The event places a particular emphasis on the work of Asian artists, reinforcing its position as one of the region’s most prominent cultural festivals.
As Japan’s tourism continues to flourish, the Setouchi Triennale 2025 stands as a key attraction, drawing visitors to the country’s scenic islands for a one-of-a-kind cultural journey filled with art, history, and unforgettable experiences. The festival’s ongoing success positions it as a significant cultural event on the global stage, with visitors eager to explore Japan’s artistic and historical treasures.
