The Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) is celebrating its 70th anniversary this month, marking a significant milestone with a series of exciting events and initiatives throughout the island. Established on April 1, 1955, the JTB has long been a driving force in establishing Jamaica as one of the premier travel destinations in the Caribbean. The official anniversary festivities will kick off on April 6 with a special church service, followed by a Gala Awards Ceremony to honor the significant contributions of former employees.
In addition to these celebrations, a documentary highlighting the JTB’s history will be unveiled, alongside a virtual exhibition hosted by the Clive Taffe Library. This exhibition will offer an in-depth exploration of the JTB’s remarkable journey, featuring promotional campaigns spanning from 1955 to the present, including vintage advertisements, commercials, and marketing materials. The Board will also engage with the Tourism Action Clubs, a program designed to educate secondary and tertiary students about the vital role tourism plays in Jamaica’s economy.
“Jamaica was an emerging island destination when the Jamaica Tourist Board was first established, welcoming just over 100,000 visitors annually,” said Hon. Edmund Bartlett, Minister of Tourism, Jamaica. “By end of 2025, we anticipate welcoming nearly 5 million visitors—a remarkable achievement that speaks to the unwavering dedication of the Jamaican people across generations. We have seen unprecedented growth in our investments, infrastructure and earnings and I thank our workers and partners for their hard work and passion that have transformed Jamaica into a global tourism powerhouse.”
Since its founding, the JTB has played a key role in showcasing Jamaica’s natural beauty, rich culture, and world-class hospitality to travelers worldwide. Its ongoing initiatives have been instrumental in positioning the island as a leading Caribbean destination, attracting millions of visitors each year and significantly contributing to Jamaica’s economic prosperity.
“As we proudly celebrate 70 years of the Jamaica Tourist Board, we are inspired to build upon our incredible legacy and shape an even brighter future,” said Donovan White, Jamaica’s Director of Tourism. “We are also leveraging digital innovations, targeted campaigns, and strategic partnerships to drive even greater awareness and demand worldwide. This marks the beginning of a new era for Jamaican tourism, and we are committed to its continued growth.”
