India has broadened its e‑Visa facility to include entry through 14 strategic seaports including Alang in Gujarat, Hazira in Surat, Tuticorin (V.O. Chidambaranar Port) in Tamil Nadu, Pipavav in Gujarat, Porbandar and Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, facilitating easier access for international visitors arriving by sea with valid electronic visas. This expansion supports tourism growth in coastal regions and aligns with broader efforts to modernise immigration procedures and promote cruise tourism and maritime travel experiences along India’s extensive coastline.

What the E‑Visa Expansion Means for Travel to India

Previously, foreign nationals holding e‑Visas were restricted to designated airports and a limited number of seaport entry points. With the new policy, travelers can now arrive directly through Alang, Hazira, Tuticorin, Pipavav, Porbandar, Nagapattinam and several other seaports that have been designated as official Immigration Check Posts (ICPs) for e‑Visa holders. This means that cruise passengers and international maritime travelers can disembark and enter India without needing separate visa arrangements at many coastal destinations.

Cruise tourism is increasingly important for India’s travel sector, especially for travellers seeking multi‑destination itineraries that include seaside cities, heritage ports and cultural hotspots. With entry now permitted at more seaports, cruise lines can develop expanded routes along the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, allowing visitors to explore coastal and inland attractions without detours to traditional airport hubs.

Key Seaports Now Accessible With E‑Visa for Tourists

Among the 14 seaports newly designated for e‑Visa entry are several that are likely to shape India’s coastal tourism: Alang — known for one of the world’s largest ship‑breaking yards — now serves as an official maritime entry point that can also link to cultural tours in Gujarat’s inland cities; Hazira near Surat provides access to the western coastline and nearby historic and natural attractions; Tuticorin serves as a gateway to Tamil Nadu’s southern beaches, temple towns and marine tourism zones; Pipavav connects cruise traffic with the Saurashtra region; Porbandar — the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi — offers historical and coastal tourism opportunities; and Nagapattinam opens a corridor for tourism in Tamil Nadu’s scenic eastern coast.

India’s e‑Visa policy requires that travelers enter through authorised ports that are equipped to process immigration upon arrival with their electronic visa approvals. The addition of seaports expands travel options while maintaining secure and regulated entry, enabling cruise passengers and foreign visitors to embark on coastal tourism itineraries without additional visa complications.

Enhancing Cruise Tourism and Coastal Travel Choices

With easier access via seaports, India’s tourism industry can promote cruise tourism routes that highlight the country’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Coastal travel experiences may include visits to beaches, historical forts, temples and local markets accessible from port cities. The ability to enter India directly through seaports invites longer stays and immersive travel experiences that combine urban and rural tourism, maritime history and regional culture.

For example, visitors arriving at Tuticorin can explore nearby beaches such as Punnakayal Beach and historic temples before extending their journey to the inland attractions of Madurai or Rameswaram. Travelers disembarking at Porbandar can visit historic sites such as Kirti Mandir and the coastal stretch of Chorwad Beach. Similarly, Hazira can serve as a gateway to exploring the diamond and textile city of Surat, as well as engaging with cultural tours across Gujarat.

Seamless Travel with Electronic Visa Entry

Travel planning for international visitors now involves ensuring the e‑Visa application is completed in advance of arrival, and that entry is made at one of the officially designated ICPs including these seaports. E‑Visas typically allow stays for tourism purposes, making India accessible for leisure travel, cultural tours, spiritual journeys, medical travel, business engagements and certain professional activities.

By expanding the number of authorised entry points via sea, India aims to reduce logistical hurdles for travelers, streamline immigration checks at ports, and support an environment where cruises and maritime travel are attractive options for global visitors looking to experience India’s coastal diversity.

Supporting Regional Tourism Development

This expansion is expected to benefit not only major coastal cities but also smaller port‑linked towns and regions that can offer natural sights, local crafts, coastal cuisine, and cultural festivals. Regions near these ports can leverage the increased flow of international visitors to promote community‑based tourism activities, watersports, eco‑tourism excursions, and inland exploration packages tailored to cruise schedules and seaport arrivals.

India’s maritime tourism strategy continues to align with broader national objectives to strengthen connectivity across its coastline, promote travel diversity and distribute tourism benefits across multiple states. By improving accessibility through the e‑Visa programme and modernising immigration procedures at seaports, India invites visitors to discover its coastal charm and offers multiple travel routes beyond conventional airport gateways.

Whether cruise passengers arrive at Alang, Tuticorin or Nagapattinam, the expanded e‑Visa entry points provide a more flexible, country‑wide platform for international travel planning giving tourists the opportunity to explore shores, cities and cultural landscapes across India’s vast maritime frontier.
