In a significant move to position the Philippines as a leader in health tourism within the ASEAN region, key public and private sector players have united to support the HWONFEX 2026 initiative. This powerful coalition, spearheaded by the Department of Tourism (DOT), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), and the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care (PITAHC), formalized their commitment with a signing event at Newport World Resorts in Parañaque, Manila.
HWONFEX 2026 is set to become a milestone event in ASEAN health tourism, aspiring to establish the region as a global hub for medical travel and wellness. This partnership aims to facilitate the development of health intelligence networks and cross-border wellness innovations, enhancing the overall health tourism ecosystem across Southeast Asia. By forming strategic economic linkages, the initiative seeks to consolidate various fragmented wellness sectors into a cohesive and high-impact industry.
The Strategy Behind HWONFEX 2026
With endorsement from the Philippine government, HWONFEX 2026 has been granted the status of an ASEAN-recognized event. Organzier Macky Soriano highlighted the evolution of wellness as a critical component of the macro-economy, citing its contribution of over 10 percent to the nation’s GDP. Soriano emphasized the potential of HWONFEX to serve as a marketplace bridging health intelligence with capital. He pointed out that stakeholders must leverage this opportunity over the next 11 years until the Philippines hosts its next ASEAN Chairmanship, ensuring lasting health resilience in the region.
The declaration marks a significant step towards creating interconnected economic corridors that enhance the health tourism sector. Former Tourism Secretary Wanda Tulfo-Teo articulated the strategic importance of attracting high-value visitors to stimulate national economic growth. Meanwhile, Attorney Adonis Sulit from DSWD stressed the need for inclusive grassroots development that utilizes local labor to create economic opportunities.
Moreover, the private sector has a crucial role to play in expanding this ecosystem. Dr. Paulo Tugbang from DOT acknowledged the importance of B2B trade expo components, which can funnel substantial resources into local healthcare infrastructures through buyer procurement sessions that target international partnerships.
Harnessing the Wellness Boom
The health and wellness sector is experiencing remarkable growth, with the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) estimating a current valuation of $6.8 trillion and a projected growth toward $9 trillion. The Philippines alone has seen a 31 percent increase in its wellness market since 2019, now valued at $47.3 billion. This sector is a vital component of national development, contributing 10.2 percent to GDP and ranking eighth in the Asia Pacific region.
Domestic tourism serves as the backbone of the local wellness travel industry, accounting for around 70 percent of wellness trip volumes. However, efforts are now focused on attracting affluent international visitors, who tend to spend significantly more than their domestic counterparts. Foreign wellness tourists spend an average of $1,166 per trip, outpacing general international tourists by 62 percent. This influx of foreign capital directly supports local health systems and hospitality initiatives, facilitated by campaigns like Go and Get Better.
Blueprint for Regional Integration
The initiative lays out three operational pathways aligned with Philippine national development goals and ASEAN’s socio-cultural plans: Go Explore, Grow Communities, and Glow Together. The Go Explore pathway focuses on enhancing travel infrastructure to attract high-value medical tourists, while Grow Communities emphasizes investment and trade that support local capacities and workforce development.
The Glow Together pathway integrates public health with local organic products, creating a bridge between local manufacturers and international healthcare systems. This holistic approach aims to establish health destinations that meet world-class standards of care, as noted by Dr. Ma. Theresa Iñigo from PITAHC.
Bridging Global Market Needs
The HWONFEX strategy encompasses a structured interaction among various stakeholders, activating international trade networks and clinical ties across diverse aspects of the wellness economy. From advanced medical providers to holistic health practitioners, the full spectrum of wellness services will be available, allowing seamless exchanges between buyers and sellers.
Participants include medical travel coordinators, wellness hospitality entities, and nutraceutical brands, all focusing on delivering the highest quality in health experiences. These strategic partnerships will facilitate comprehensive health solutions that address both local and international market demands.
An Exciting Upcoming Event
The HWONFEX 2026 event is scheduled for September 4-6, 2026, at SMX Convention Center, a premier venue for large-scale exhibitions. It will feature a two-day international trade expo centered on trade commerce and facilitated business matchmaking, while Newport World Resorts will host high-level summits and advocacy initiatives. The event will showcase the vibrant health landscape of the Philippines through a nationwide post-event tour across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
Additionally, an eco-conscious virtual category will allow global participants to engage digitally, helping reduce the event’s carbon footprint and promoting sustainable practices in the health sector.
