Hong Kong Tourism Development Forum Highlights the City’s Strengths as a Premier Global Destination
The Hong Kong Tourism Development Forum recently underscored the city’s position as a leading international travel hub. Co-hosted by the Hong Kong Tourism Board and China Tourism Group, the event gathered over 600 tourism professionals to discuss future trends and strategic directions for Hong Kong’s tourism industry.
Hong Kong is actively reshaping its tourism landscape, with a particular focus on expanding its cultural tourism offerings. The city aims to establish itself as a “world-class premier tourism destination” through innovative strategies designed to define the future of global tourism.
Despite navigating both challenges and opportunities, Hong Kong is taking bold, forward-thinking steps to revitalize its tourism sector. Since 2023, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government has prioritized the development of an event-driven economy, positioning Hong Kong as the “Capital of Events.” This initiative is designed to attract international visitors and stimulate local economic activity, with an impressive calendar of events spanning cultural, artistic, financial, and trade sectors.
In 2024, Hong Kong hosted over 240 major events, attracting more than two million visitors. These events generated a significant economic impact, with consumer spending reaching approximately 7.5 billion HK dollars (around 966 million USD) and contributing 4.5 billion HK dollars to the local economy.
Looking ahead to the first half of 2025, projections indicate a 50 percent increase in tourist arrivals, with around 840,000 visitors expected. This boost is expected to drive 3.3 billion HK dollars in consumer spending and 1.8 billion HK dollars in economic value.
In late 2024, the HKSAR government introduced its Tourism Industry 2.0 Development Blueprint, which outlines four key strategies and 133 measures to enhance Hong Kong’s appeal as a fully immersive destination, with the vision that “tourism is everywhere.” This strategic plan will shape the city’s tourism policies over the next five years.
Recent data from the Hong Kong Tourism Board reveals a significant increase in entertainment spending by mainland Chinese overnight visitors, which rose by 61.3 percent, reaching 4.19 billion HK dollars in 2024. Exhibitions, theater performances, and concerts have become major attractions for these visitors.
Additionally, Hong Kong welcomed over 10 million visitors from outside mainland China in 2024. A global consumer market consultancy recently ranked Hong Kong as the fourth most visited city worldwide by international tourists, reinforcing its status as a leading global tourism destination
