The Black Watch will add another 800 visitors to this year’s record-breaking number of cruise visitors.
The majority of these visitors will be from the United Kingdom.
Helsinki has already been visited by 420,000 international cruise visitors this year, making 2013 an altime record-breaking year with a growth of 14 % compared to 2012.
The total number of ships visiting the city reached 284, which was a 7 % increase from the previous season. The majority of Helsinki’s international cruise traffic is focused in Hernesaari and Jätkäsaari in the West Harbour.
”Despite the challenging economic situation, ships in the Baltic have sailed with more passengers than they did last year. A few shipping companies have also increased their number of visits to Helsinki. Next year’s cruise traffic is expected to reach similar levels as this year,” says Cruise Manager Noora Heino from the Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau.
The nationalities of Helsinki’s cruise visitors have largely remained the same. The majority of the cruise tourists that arrived in Helsinki came from Germany (some 102,000 visitors), the United States (some 97,000 visitors) and the UK (some 71,000 visitors), with strong growth recorded from all three. Next up in the number of visitors were Spain, Canada, Australia, Italy, Mexico, France and Brazil.
”The number of Australian cruise visitors, which reached nearly 12,000, was, for the first time, higher than the number of Italian visitors, which was only some 10,000. As for Latin American nationalities, the numbers of Mexican, Brazilian and Argentinean visitors are also showing steady growth. The numbers of Japanese and Chinese cruise visitors have also been growing fast, but their share of the total number of visitors is still only a few percent,” says Heino.
Cruise tourism is still on the rise and the Baltic Sea is one of the most popular regions for it. Currently, there are two new cruise ships being built for the Baltic, with one of them already fully booked for the 2015 cruise season.
In Helsinki, cruise tourism is being jointly developed by the Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau, the Port of Helsinki and local service providers. The Helsinki Cruise Network currently includes a total of 58 companies and other operators.
