Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is revolutionizing airport expansion in the U.S. with its cutting-edge modular construction of Concourse D. This innovative method enables substantial growth while ensuring that daily operations remain unaffected, allowing the airport to serve almost 300,000 passengers per day with minimal disruption. The modular construction approach, carried out through overnight installations, is crafted to meet rising passenger demand without compromising service quality, reinforcing the airport’s leadership in aviation infrastructure. As the world’s busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) handles nearly 300,000 passengers every day and is strategically located within a two-hour flight of 80% of the U.S. population. Originally built in 1980, Concourse D, with its 5-meter-wide (18 feet) hallways, was in need of an upgrade to accommodate the increasing flow of passengers.Due to the necessity of keeping the concourse operational, Mammoet teamed up with the Holder-Moody-Bryson-Sovereign joint venture to devise a solution that minimized disruption. Their strategy involved offsite prefabrication and the overnight delivery and installation of modules via Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs). The modules were delivered on a weekly basis between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m., following a phased approach. In the second phase, deliveries increased to two modules per week. The heaviest module, weighing 694.45 tonnes, required 92 axle-lines of SPMTs to move it across more than a mile. To position the modules with exactness, 18 300-tonne climbing jacks were used. These jacks operate by stacking timbers to gradually raise or lower the modules, a necessary technique to position them at a lower elevation than where they arrived, which was beyond the lowering capacity of the SPMTs. Upon completion, the expansion will extend Concourse D by over 87 meters (288 feet), providing additional space for passengers and retail areas, while also accommodating larger aircraft. This project exemplifies how modular construction can be leveraged in complex airport environments, enabling significant expansion without disrupting day-to-day operations at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
