Greece Tourism Hits New Summer Heights as International Travellers Flood Hotels and Islands

Greece

Greece, Athens and the Greek Islands continued to attract international travellers in July 2026, with foreign visitors accounting for more than four-fifths of arrivals at tourist accommodation establishments. Provisional data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) shows that Greece recorded 6,608,128 arrivals and 31,701,467 nights spent in hotels, similar establishments, tourist campsites and short-stay accommodation during the month. Arrivals increased 2.5 per cent from July 2025, while overnight stays rose 2.0 per cent. Non-residents accounted for 80.3 per cent of arrivals and 87.6 per cent of nights spent.

International Travellers Drive the July Increase

The latest figures show that international tourism remained the main source of accommodation demand during Greece’s peak summer period. Non-resident arrivals increased 2.9 per cent year on year in July, while nights spent by international visitors rose 2.2 per cent. Domestic arrivals increased 0.8 per cent and nights spent by residents rose 0.4 per cent.
The average length of stay across all types of tourist accommodation reached 4.8 days in July. This includes stays in hotels, comparable accommodation establishments, campsites and short-stay properties, giving travellers a wide range of ways to experience Greece during the summer season.

Greek Islands Remain Central to Summer Travel

For international visitors, Greece’s islands continue to provide some of the country’s most recognisable travel experiences. Santorini combines volcanic landscapes, caldera views and whitewashed settlements, while Mykonos is known for beaches, waterfront dining and its compact historic centre.
Crete offers a broader itinerary, with beaches, archaeological sites, mountain villages and local food experiences spread across the island. Rhodes combines medieval heritage with coastal tourism, while Corfu brings Venetian architecture, beaches and green landscapes to the Ionian side of Greece.
Travellers can also build island-hopping itineraries through the Cyclades, Dodecanese or Ionian Islands, using ferries and domestic flights to connect different destinations.

Athens Adds Culture and City Experiences

Athens remains an important starting point for visitors arriving in Greece, particularly for travellers combining a city break with an island holiday. The capital provides access to the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum, historic neighbourhoods and a large selection of restaurants and accommodation.
A stay in Athens can also be paired with destinations elsewhere in mainland Greece. Visitors can travel onward to archaeological sites, mountain areas and coastal communities, creating itineraries that combine urban, cultural and outdoor experiences.

Accommodation Growth Extends Beyond Hotels

The July statistics cover more than traditional hotels. ELSTAT includes hotels and similar establishments, tourist campsites and short-stay accommodation establishments, reflecting the range of accommodation available to travellers visiting Greece.
This wider accommodation market gives visitors different options depending on the type of trip they are planning. A family holiday on Crete can include a resort or apartment stay, while a couple visiting the Cyclades may choose a boutique property or short-term rental. Campgrounds provide another option for travellers exploring mainland and island landscapes by road.

July Continues a Strong Tourism Pattern

The July 2026 figures continue a longer period of growth in Greek accommodation demand. ELSTAT’s annual 2025 data recorded a 2.8 per cent increase in total arrivals and a 2.2 per cent rise in overnight stays compared with 2024. Non-resident arrivals increased 2.9 per cent in 2025, while nights spent by non-residents rose 2.2 per cent.
The latest July data therefore places the 2026 summer season within an established pattern of increasing accommodation activity, with international visitors continuing to account for the majority of demand.

Travellers Have More Ways to Experience Greece

The scale of July accommodation activity also highlights the variety of travel experiences available across Greece. Visitors can combine ancient heritage with island beaches, food tourism with village visits, or city breaks with outdoor adventures.
In the north, Thessaloniki offers urban culture, waterfront areas and access to nearby destinations. Mainland regions provide opportunities for hiking, road trips and archaeological travel, while coastal areas support beach holidays beyond the best-known islands.
For travellers staying longer, Greece can be approached as a multi-destination journey rather than a single-stop holiday. Athens can serve as an entry point before visitors continue to the Cyclades, Crete, Rhodes, Corfu or other islands.

International Demand Shapes Greece’s Peak Summer

For visitors planning a Greek holiday, the data also reflects the continued popularity of combining different travel experiences within one country. From Athens and ancient landmarks to Santorini sunsets, Crete’s beaches and Rhodes’ historic streets, Greece offers multiple destinations within a single national tourism network.
As the 2026 summer season progresses, July’s 6.61 million accommodation arrivals and 31.70 million overnight stays show how strongly international travel continues to shape Greece’s peak-season tourism landscape.
