Thessaloniki Climbs Global Rankings as a Rising Star in International Meetings and Events
Thessaloniki, the bustling heart of Central Macedonia, has achieved a historic breakthrough in the global Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry. In the 2024 rankings released by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Thessaloniki secured 46th place worldwide and 28th in Europe—its highest position to date. This impressive performance cements the city’s status as an emerging force in the international meetings arena.

Unveiled at IMEX 2025 in Frankfurt, the ICCA rankings are based on data from over 11,000 qualifying association meetings held globally. Thessaloniki’s rise places it alongside major cities like Toronto, showcasing its growing appeal to global event organizers and business tourism professionals.

Greece Ascends in Global Conference Tourism
Thessaloniki’s achievement significantly strengthens Greece’s reputation in the global meetings industry. The country now holds the 18th position worldwide, bolstered by Athens’ top-10 placement among international meeting destinations. This joint success highlights Greece’s expanding role as a high-caliber host for global conferences and professional gatherings.

Behind Thessaloniki’s success lies the strategic work of the Thessaloniki Convention Bureau (TCB). Through consistent international outreach, destination branding, and stakeholder collaboration, the TCB has positioned Thessaloniki as a trusted and innovative destination for major events.

Record Year for Meetings and Economic Impact
In 2024, Thessaloniki hosted a record 47 ICCA-qualified international association meetings, drawing more than 13,500 delegates and generating an estimated €35 million in direct economic impact. Each attendee spent approximately €2,576, reflecting the considerable financial benefit of MICE tourism to the local economy.

Beyond ICCA criteria, TCB data reveals a total of 727 conferences and workshops were held in Thessaloniki last year, attracting around 170,000 participants. November led the calendar with 89 events, followed by May (85), April (81), and March (77)—while August saw a seasonal dip with only 13 events.

Strategic Investments Fuel Consistent Growth
Thessaloniki’s momentum is no accident. A coordinated approach involving public institutions, tourism authorities, and private-sector partners has driven improvements in infrastructure, service quality, and international promotion. These efforts are now translating into tangible growth in both the volume and variety of hosted events.

Corporate Events Surge in 2024
In addition to association meetings, Thessaloniki saw a marked increase in corporate events, with over 2,500 business gatherings estimated in 2024 alone. This surge reflects a rising level of trust among corporations in Thessaloniki as a flexible, well-connected, and cost-effective destination for business events, incentive travel, and executive summits.

Ideal Destination for Mid-Sized International Meetings
Thessaloniki stands out for its strong alignment with the global trend toward medium-sized events (150–999 participants). Its mix of accessible venues, walkable urban center, and personalized services provides event planners with a balanced and efficient setting. This strategic positioning gives the city a competitive advantage in attracting organizations seeking a refined but intimate event experience.

A Vision for the Future of Thessaloniki’s MICE Sector
With its upward trajectory clearly established, Thessaloniki is poised for continued success in the MICE space. Stakeholders across local government, tourism, and event planning are already working to build on this momentum. Upcoming investments in transport, event venues, and hospitality infrastructure, combined with professional marketing and management services, will help Thessaloniki scale even greater heights.

National tourism strategies that integrate leisure and business travel are also reinforcing the city’s potential, offering visitors a rich blend of professional opportunity and cultural exploration.

From Regional Player to Global Contender
Thessaloniki’s rise in the ICCA 2024 rankings signals more than just improved statistics—it represents a profound transformation. Now competing with global hubs like Toronto, the city is fast becoming a vital node in the international events network.

With strategic leadership, sustainable growth planning, and a commitment to excellence, Thessaloniki is not only enhancing its visibility but also reshaping its economic landscape and global reputation.

As one of Europe’s most promising MICE destinations, Thessaloniki is setting the stage for a future filled with opportunity, innovation, and world-class events.
