The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched a major recruitment initiative to hire an additional 2,000 air traffic controllers across the United States. This decision comes as the agency grapples with a growing shortage of controllers, many of whom are nearing retirement. The FAA has acknowledged a shortfall of around 3,833 controllers, placing significant pressure on the U.S. air traffic control system.
To tackle this shortage, the FAA has implemented a series of strategies designed to simplify the hiring and training process. These include removing certain hiring barriers and offering higher training pay to attract more candidates. This approach has yielded impressive results, with over 10,000 individuals applying for the positions. More than 8,300 of these applicants have advanced to the testing phase for training, demonstrating a strong demand for these essential roles.
