Costa Rica Faces Unexpected Tourism Decline in 2025 Amidst Rising Costs and Health Concerns
Costa Rica has long been a popular travel destination, especially for tourists from the United States and the United Kingdom, contributing significantly to its economy. However, in 2025, the tourism sector experienced an unexpected downturn.
In February 2025, Costa Rica saw a noticeable drop in tourist arrivals, with just 270,810 travelers arriving by air, a 7% decline from the previous year. According to the Costa Rican Tourism Board, this marked the sixth consecutive month of declining visitor numbers.
Several factors have led to this downward trend. One of the primary reasons is the increase in travel costs, largely driven by fluctuations in the local currency, which has made Costa Rica a less attractive destination for tourists. Along with rising prices, concerns over safety have also contributed to the decline. Reports of rising crimes, including thefts and assaults, have caused potential visitors to reconsider their travel plans.
A significant health scare involving shellfish contamination has further impacted tourism. In early 2025, tests on shellfish from the coastal region between Playa Herradura and the Guacimal River found paralytic marine toxins, prompting the U.S. Embassy to issue a ban on harvesting and selling bivalve mollusks in that area. This public health issue has created additional concerns for travelers.
Moreover, Costa Rica has been dealing with an increase in mosquito-borne diseases, including chikungunya, dengue, and Zika. By mid-April 2025, more than 1,900 dengue cases were reported, along with several cases of chikungunya, malaria, and Zika. To address these concerns, the Costa Rican Ministry of Health has intensified efforts to combat the spread of these diseases, including fumigation campaigns and the elimination of mosquito breeding grounds. Vaccines for dengue and chikungunya are available in various countries, offering some hope for prevention.
Despite these challenges, Costa Rica’s natural wonders, including its lush rainforests and pristine beaches, continue to make it a sought-after destination. While travelers now have more choices across Central America and the Caribbean, Costa Rica remains a top option for those seeking a distinctive travel experience in 2025
