Celestyal Discovery Pioneers Sustainability with Historic Marine Biofuel Refueling in Greece
Celestyal Discovery has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in maritime sustainability by becoming the first cruise ship in Greek waters to be refueled with a marine biofuel blend. The refueling, completed at the Port of Lavrion, was a collaborative effort between Coral Marine Products SA—part of the Motor Oil Group—and Celestyal, marking a significant advancement in eco-conscious cruising.
This innovative fuel blend combines traditional marine fuel with a second-generation biofuel derived from recycled cooking oils. Fully compliant with the ISO 8217:2024 standards, the new fuel is projected to lower CO₂ emissions by approximately 21%, representing a major step forward in the cruise industry’s shift toward more sustainable energy solutions. By integrating biofuels into its fleet operations, Celestyal is offering a cleaner alternative that meets the rising global demand for greener travel options.

This landmark event is part of Celestyal’s wider commitment to sustainability, reflecting its strategy to transition toward cleaner fuels and enhance its environmental performance across all areas of operation. The company remains dedicated to minimizing its carbon footprint while leading the tourism industry toward a more sustainable future.
Celestyal has emphasized the importance of combining local knowledge with international environmental standards, nurturing innovation that serves both the planet and future generations of travelers. As the cruise industry increasingly prioritizes eco-friendly practices, this initiative showcases the crucial role that biofuels could play in transforming the sector.
The Celestyal Discovery, which joined the company’s fleet in November 2023 following an extensive refurbishment, is ready to welcome 1,360 passengers aboard. This summer, it will offer three- and four-night “Iconic Greek Islands” cruises departing from Athens, with fares starting at $389 per guest. After its Greek cruising season concludes, the ship will transition to the Arabian Gulf for its first-ever “Iconic Arabia” season, featuring short cruises from Abu Dhabi, with prices beginning at $718 for two travelers.
