Celestyal Discovery Leads Sustainability Efforts with Landmark Marine Biofuel Refueling in Greece

Celestyal Discovery has set a new standard for sustainable cruising, becoming the first vessel in Greek waters to refuel using a marine biofuel blend. The milestone refueling operation took place at the Port of Lavrion and was facilitated by Coral Marine Products SA, a Motor Oil Group company, in partnership with Celestyal.

This groundbreaking initiative features a blend of traditional marine fuel and second-generation biofuel derived from recycled cooking oils. Certified under the ISO 8217:2024 standards, the eco-friendly fuel is anticipated to cut CO₂ emissions by approximately 21%, representing a significant leap forward in the cruise sector’s environmental initiatives. The adoption of biofuels not only offers a cleaner energy solution but also supports the industry’s broader commitment to sustainable energy alternatives.

This pivotal event marks a major achievement in Celestyal’s comprehensive sustainability roadmap, which aims to integrate cleaner fuel technologies and improve environmental practices throughout its operations. As part of its long-term vision, Celestyal is dedicated to minimizing its environmental footprint and fostering greener tourism practices for future generations.

Celestyal emphasized its commitment to blending local know-how with global environmental goals, championing innovative measures that drive positive change for the planet and the cruising community alike. As the cruise industry increasingly shifts its focus toward eco-conscious practices, Celestyal’s initiative underscores the growing role biofuels are expected to play in shaping a cleaner future for maritime travel.

The Celestyal Discovery, which officially joined the company’s fleet in November 2023, recently underwent a major refurbishment to enhance the guest experience. With a capacity for 1,360 passengers, the ship will offer three- and four-night “Iconic Greek Islands” itineraries departing from Athens between April and November, with cruise fares starting at $389 per person. After its season in Greece, Celestyal Discovery will head to the Arabian Gulf for its inaugural “Iconic Arabia” season, featuring short cruises from Abu Dhabi, with fares starting from $718 for two guests.
