Bogotá’s New MICE Tourism Initiative Paves The Way For Sustainable Event Management In Latin America

Bogotá, Colombia’s capital, has been making significant strides toward becoming a key Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourist destination. Colombia’s administration, in collaboration with several local organizations, has launched a program aimed at boosting local tourism service providers’ capacity and providing them with resources needed to drive innovation and sustainability in their arena. This initiative has been launched as part of a bigger plan toward making Bogotá a key corporate, academic, and institutional event site in Latin America.

MICE Tourism as a Key Economic Driver

The MICE tourism sector plays a vital role in boosting the local economy of Bogotá by attracting corporate and academic visitors from around the world. These visitors engage in high-impact events such as conferences, meetings, and exhibitions, which not only generate employment opportunities but also contribute to consumer spending. The influx of international delegates further enhances the city’s global reputation, presenting it as a modern and vibrant hub for business and leisure travel.

Diana Marcela Morales, the Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism, has emphasized the significance of meeting tourism in elevating Colombia’s standing on the world stage. According to Morales, “Meeting tourism not only boosts the local economy, it also presents us to the world as a prepared, diverse, and sustainable country. Bogotá has everything it needs to consolidate itself as the epicenter of major events.”

Training for Competitiveness and Sustainability

To support the growth of the MICE tourism sector, a specialized diploma course was offered to 56 local tourism service providers. The course, which focused on enhancing competitiveness, sustainability, and innovation in event management, was developed as part of a strategic partnership between the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism, Fontur, Fenalco, the Bogotá Chamber of Commerce, and Externado University of Colombia. This program was designed to help local businesses improve their capabilities and stay ahead in a highly competitive global market.

The 120-hour in-person training program was split into two specialized tracks: the Diploma in Comprehensive Event Management and the Sustainable Event Management Course. Each course aimed at providing valuable knowledge to service providers in Bogotá’s MICE tourism ecosystem. The Externado de Colombia University and Meeting Professionals International (MPI) organized and delivered the courses, which covered essential topics ranging from legal and financial aspects of event planning to the integration of sustainable practices.

Comprehensive Event Management Diploma

The Comprehensive Event Management Diploma, attended by 28 tourism service providers, was designed for officials and employees of companies and MSMEs in the tourism sector. The participants were trained in various event modalities, operational management, social responsibility practices, and how to evaluate the success of events. In addition to receiving a strong foundation in the technical aspects of event planning, attendees were awarded the international “Meeting Essentials” certification, which is widely recognized in the MICE industry.

This certification provides a competitive edge to service providers, signaling their expertise to potential clients across the world. By aligning with international standards, Bogotá’s local businesses are better positioned to cater to global event planners and organizers.

Sustainable Event Management Course

The second training track, the Sustainable Event Management Course, was attended by an additional 28 service providers. The course focused on responsible event management practices and strategies to mitigate the environmental impact of large-scale meetings, fairs, and conferences. As sustainability becomes increasingly important to travelers and corporate clients alike, service providers in Bogotá are learning how to integrate eco-friendly solutions into their event planning processes.

The course also covered emerging technologies in MICE tourism, teaching participants how to incorporate these tools into their operations to enhance efficiency and reduce waste. This approach allows Bogotá’s MICE tourism sector to meet the growing demand for sustainable, eco-conscious events, which is critical to attracting environmentally minded organizations and guests.

Public-Private Partnerships and Investment

The initiative has been made possible thanks to an investment of $1.066 billion USD, with 77% of the funding co-financed by the Ministry of Commerce through Fontur. This investment highlights the government’s commitment to developing the MICE tourism sector and ensuring that it can compete with other regional destinations. The program’s success is also a testament to the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors, as well as academia, in driving innovation and fostering growth within the tourism industry.

MICE Congress and Knowledge Sharing

As a part of this training program, Bogotá hosted the MICE Congress in the second half of 2024. The academic event brought together more than 400 national and international attendees, who shared innovative practices and policies designed to strengthen the events industry across Colombia. This congress served as a platform for knowledge exchange, enabling attendees to learn from global leaders in the MICE sector and discover new opportunities for collaboration.

The MICE Congress also highlighted the city’s ongoing efforts to improve its infrastructure, promote sustainable practices, and ensure that it remains an attractive destination for international conferences and corporate meetings. These initiatives help solidify Bogotá’s standing as a leading MICE destination in Latin America.

Strengthening Bogotá’s MICE Reputation

The combination of specialized training, strategic investments, and international collaborations is positioning Bogotá as a top contender in the global MICE tourism market. The city is now home to an ecosystem of highly skilled service providers ready to host a wide range of international events.
