Barcelona, the cultural heart of Spain, has set new tourism records in February 2026, outpacing other Spanish cities such as Madrid, Málaga, and Bilbao. Despite February traditionally being considered a low season for travel, the city experienced a significant increase in both international visitors and their spending. This surge in tourism, which surpasses figures from February 2025, marks a recovery to pre-pandemic levels and highlights Barcelona’s growing appeal as a major global travel hub.

In a month that typically sees fewer tourists, Barcelona’s tourism sector has proven its resilience. The city not only recorded a 13.1% increase in visitor numbers compared to the previous year but also achieved a remarkable 23.5% jump from February 2019, the year before the pandemic. These numbers underline the city’s growing status as one of Europe’s most desirable destinations, attracting a mix of leisure and business travelers.

Growth in Tourist Numbers and Overnight Stays

Barcelona saw a notable rise in both the number of tourists and their length of stay. The city welcomed 2.8 million overnight stays, the highest ever recorded for the month of February. This represented a 7.4% increase over February 2025 and a 17.4% boost compared to pre-pandemic numbers in 2019. Hotels remain the top choice for accommodation, with 61.2% of visitors opting for them, followed by holiday lets at 32.8% and youth hostels at 6.1%.

This uptick in overnight stays, especially in a typically quieter month, signals a positive trend for Barcelona’s tourism sector, setting the stage for a strong year ahead.

Hotel Performance and Profitability

Barcelona’s hotel sector also achieved impressive results in February 2026, leading other Spanish cities in key metrics like international tourist arrivals, hotel occupancy rates, and profitability. The average daily rate (ADR) for hotel rooms increased to €153, marking a 1.1% rise compared to the previous year. This was the highest ADR among all Spanish cities, reflecting the growing demand for accommodation in the city.

Hotel occupancy rates reached historic levels, with an overall occupancy of 63.4%, a 3.1 percentage point increase from February 2025. Even more impressive was the room occupancy rate, which soared to 77.8%, up 4.1 percentage points compared to the previous year. This indicates a strong market performance and the continued appeal of Barcelona as a prime tourist destination.

Tourist Spending and Expenditure Breakdown

Alongside increased visitor numbers, tourism spending also saw a boost. On average, tourists spent €105.5 during their stay in the city, marking a 7.7% increase compared to February 2025. The breakdown of spending revealed that food and drink accounted for the largest share, representing 42.4% of total expenditure. Shopping followed with 26.8%, while cultural activities made up 15.7% and transport within the city accounted for 14.6%.

This increase in spending reflects a shift toward higher-value travel experiences, as visitors invest more in quality dining, shopping, and cultural activities during their trips. Barcelona’s rich cultural heritage, diverse shopping opportunities, and vibrant dining scene continue to be major attractions for tourists.

Record-Breaking Performance at Barcelona’s Airport and Port

Barcelona’s international connectivity continues to be a driving force in its tourism success. Barcelona Airport saw over 3.8 million passengers in February 2026, a 2.8% increase compared to the previous year. Intercontinental passenger traffic surged by 14.8%, demonstrating the growing demand for long-haul travel to and from the city.

The Port of Barcelona also experienced a record-breaking month, with the highest number of cruise passengers recorded for February, exceeding 100,000. This marks an 18.3% increase from the previous year, showcasing the strength of Barcelona as a cruise hub in the Mediterranean. Despite February traditionally being part of the low season for cruises, these figures highlight the robust performance of both air and sea travel in the city.

Strong Performance in the Job Market

Tourism remains a significant driver of employment in Barcelona, with more than 107,000 people employed in tourism-related jobs in the fourth quarter of 2025. The percentage of permanent contracts in the sector has risen to 57.2%, reflecting a stable and growing workforce in the tourism industry. The city’s ability to maintain low unemployment in the sector, with only around 7,000 people registered as unemployed, speaks to the sector’s resilience and capacity for growth.

Tourist Profile and Satisfaction

A survey by the Barcelona Tourism Observatory (OTB) provided insights into the profile of visitors. The majority of tourists were international (83%), with 70.2% male. Most visitors came for leisure (59%), followed by business travelers (31%) and a smaller group visiting for personal reasons (8%). Tourists gave Barcelona a high satisfaction rating of 8.73, underscoring the city’s status as a favorite destination for travelers from around the world.

Conclusion: Barcelona’s Strong Future in Tourism

February 2026 proved to be a record-setting month for Barcelona’s tourism industry, with growth in visitor numbers, hotel occupancy, and tourist spending. The city continues to stand out as a leading European destination, driven by its rich cultural offerings, vibrant atmosphere, and global connectivity. As the tourism sector continues to thrive, Barcelona is well-positioned to maintain its appeal to international visitors, supported by strong airport and port performance and an increasing number of tourists choosing to spend more during their stay.

With a positive outlook for the remainder of the year, Barcelona is poised for another successful tourism season, solidifying its place as one of the top travel destinations in Spain and Europe.
