Athens may see its meetings industry getting an uplift with the plans to convert the Taekwondo Olympic Stadium in Palaio Faliro into a convention and exhibition center. This move, which is backed by major players in the industry, aims to bolster Athens’ competitive edge in the global MICE market and offer the city the infrastructure required to lure leading international events.
Hoteliers and the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events) professionals in Athens have very well accepted the re-innovation of the stadium in Metropolitan Conference, Exhibition & Concert Center. The Hellenic Association of Professional Congress Organizers & Destinations Events Specialists (HAPCO & DES) and Athens-Attica & Argosaronic Hotel Association praised the decision as a game changer for Athens, closing a void that the city has had for large conference venues.
The creation of this combined facility will also represent a timely service for Athens’ events market. It will enable the city to keep pace with the increasing demand for top facilities,” remarked Evgenios Vassilikos, president of the Athens-Attica & Argosaronic Hotel Association. He also said that the unwavering support of the Attica Region in giving the go-ahead for the project will boost Athens’ profile as a premium destination and bring millions of euros to the city and wider region.
Athens has for years been unable to host major international events because of the absence of a conference center or exhibition facilities. The absence of such infrastructure has prevented the city from vying with other European capitals in the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) market, which has become a critical pillar of the global tourism market. Upon completion, this new centre is anticipated to give the city the tools that it needs to be at the forefront of the world’s international business tourism and to host large conventions and trade shows year-round.
Geographically one of the main advantages of the new conference centre. Placed in the heart of Palaio Faliro, this center will be connected to several of Athens’ other major cultural and tourism amenities. These are: the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, the ambitious Ellinikon investment project and the Aenaon Metropolitan Park, which aim to revolutionize Athens and dramatically elevate its status as a high-end destination of choice for leisure and business tourism. Furthermore, the project is set to match the continued growth of luxury hotel inventory across the region to cater for the visitors with the hardware and solutions needed to organise high-end MICE activities.
“This decision is a milestone for our industry and a demand that has been voiced for many years from MICE professionals,” added Antonia Alexandrou, president of HAPCO & DES. She stressed that with the new conference center, Athens would boast a strategic infrastructure that forged it into a high-caliber, year-round destination for business tourism, and thereby consolidated its standing as a strong international competitor in MICE tourism.
The project is widely viewed by industry experts as an essential part of Athens’ bid to diversify its tourism product and tap into the demands of the changing tastes of international visitors. With business tourism needs, much of it in the form of conferences, exhibitions, and corporate events, increasing at an unprecedented pace around the world, Athens must be able to offer potential visitors to the capital of Europe modern, equipped venues.” The new convention center will not only be the physical infrastructure to hold such events but will also allow Athens to be able to show the international MICE community that it can rise up to the increased demands in the field.
Moreover, the development is seen as having a positive economic effect on the Attica region too, as local hotels, eateries and entrepreneurs will profit from incoming MICE tourists. Flexibility will be an important design consideration for the venue, with areas available for everything from monster exhibitions down to smaller meetings and conferences. “We can cater for all kinds of events, and that’s going to make the centre a major player in Athens’ ability to compete with the major MICE venues of Barcelona, London and Paris.
“Hotelliers and event professionals are looking forward to the changes and are ready to collaborate closely with regional authorities to ensure our new venue is allowed to achieve the maximum benefit it offers. “We are thrilled by the opportunities that this new center will offer to Athens and the surrounding area. We believe that by working closely with local authorities we will be able to realize this vision and enhance Athens’ international positioning as a MICE destination,” Vassilikos said.
MICE Looking Bright for Athens With expectations so high with Athens’ MICE industry, this sector is looking quite hot right now!
There is no question about it as the makeover of Taekwondo Olympic Stadium into a leading conference and exhibition venue will do very much to improve Athens’ stature in the world of MICE because of the project as we move forward.” Strategically located, built to modern standards, and closely associated with the city’s key cultural and tourism resources, the Metropolitan Conference, Exhibition and Concert Center is a potential game-changer for Athens’ business tourism.
The project is indicative of the city’s future direction and is a new chapter in the ongoing effort to broaden and improve Athens’ tourism product, in anticipation of serving the needs of an increasingly global market and a competitive MICE industry. ATHENS A LEADING DESTINATION This has also been set as a strategic goal for Athens, which has prioritised the development of premium conference facilities and infrastructure, in a move that is also boosting its profile as a first-tier international MICE destination and giving a boost to the city’s economy and revenue from business tourism.
