Alaska Airlines to Launch Direct Flights from Seattle to Rome in 2026, Marking a Bold Move in Global Expansion Strategy
Alaska Airlines has announced a bold step in its international growth journey with the introduction of a new transatlantic route connecting Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO). Starting in May 2026, the airline will offer nonstop service between Seattle and the Italian capital, strengthening its position as a major West Coast player in the global aviation network.
This development marks a significant milestone for the carrier as it continues to evolve its international strategy. The Rome route, a key addition to its growing long-haul portfolio, is set to operate four times per week, leveraging the capabilities of Hawaiian Airlines’ Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. While the aircraft will belong to Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska Airlines will oversee and manage the route operations, exemplifying the increasing synergy between the two airlines under the Alaska Air Group.
This latest international expansion comes as Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines progress toward finalizing a single operating certificate from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)—a pivotal step in streamlining operations following their announced merger. The certificate, expected by autumn 2025, will enable the two carriers to coordinate more efficiently, share resources, and expand their joint service offerings globally.
The Seattle–Rome route reflects the group’s long-term vision of integrated operations, enhanced connectivity, and expanded international reach, particularly from its growing Seattle hub.
The Rome addition marks the third widebody international route from Seattle, following the recent launches of Tokyo Narita and Seoul Incheon services. These new connections emphasize Alaska Airlines’ mission to establish Seattle as a premier global gateway on the US West Coast. The airline aims to build a robust international schedule that connects the Pacific Northwest to major destinations across Europe and Asia.
By 2030, Alaska Airlines plans to operate twelve long-haul international destinations from Seattle, making it a central node in its evolving global network. The direct Rome service is not just a new route—it’s part of a much broader transformation of the airline’s international identity.
Alaska Airlines continues to back its growth plans with robust fleet investment. Currently operating 240 Boeing 737-series aircraft, the airline maintains a versatile and modern mainline fleet. Meanwhile, Horizon Air, Alaska’s regional arm, manages a fleet of 45 Embraer E175s, while Hawaiian Airlines contributes 73 aircraft, including a mix of Airbus A330s, Boeing 787-9s, and Boeing 717-200s.
The Dreamliner, slated for use on the Rome route, offers passengers an elevated travel experience with improved comfort, cabin pressure, fuel efficiency, and modern amenities—ideal for long-haul transatlantic travel.
In a separate development, Alaska Air Group has opted to delay the delivery of two Embraer E175 jets originally scheduled for May. The decision comes in response to possible increased costs associated with tariffs imposed under the previous US administration. While the delay affects Horizon Air’s regional fleet expansion, it does not impact Alaska Airlines’ broader international goals. The group continues to monitor the situation while maintaining its fleet expansion plans, which include the delivery of five additional E175s in the future.
This cautious approach underscores Alaska’s commitment to responsible financial management while pursuing aggressive growth in more profitable long-haul markets.
The launch of Seattle–Rome service reinforces Alaska Airlines’ intention to become a dominant international carrier on the US West Coast, particularly through its Seattle hub. It also aligns with the company’s three-year strategy to generate $1 billion in incremental profit by enhancing network efficiency, fleet utilization, and customer offerings.
With strong leadership and a clear roadmap, Alaska Airlines is positioned to elevate its global standing. The airline’s expanded global presence will not only benefit travelers across the Pacific Northwest but also set new standards for transatlantic service at a time of rising demand for direct, premium long-haul travel.
Alaska Airlines’ upcoming launch of direct flights from Seattle to Rome in May 2026 is more than just a route addition—it symbolizes the airline’s transformation into a global competitor. Coupled with its planned operational integration with Hawaiian Airlines and sustained fleet modernization, Alaska Airlines is on course to redefine international travel from the West Coast. As the Seattle hub continues to evolve into a key international gateway, the airline is firmly positioned to lead the next era of aviation connectivity for business and leisure travelers alike.
