The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has published its latest report on worldwide passenger traffic for October 2024, indicating a robust uptrend in the aviation sector.

Global Trends: There was a 7.1% rise in total passenger traffic, calculated in revenue passenger kilometers (RPK), from the same month last year. This increase paralleled a 6.1% growth in seating capacity annually. The global passenger load factor (PLF) saw an enhancement of 0.8 percentage points, reaching 83.9%.

International Sectors: The international segment exhibited strong performance with a 9.5% year-over-year (YoY) surge in traffic. Seat capacity saw an 8.6% expansion, and the load factor rose by 0.6 percentage points to 83.5%.

Domestic Sectors: On the domestic front, traffic increased by 3.5% YoY, with a 2.0% rise in seating capacity. Domestic load factors climbed 1.2 percentage points to 84.5% from October 2023.

IATA’s Director General, Willie Walsh, highlighted the positive aspects of the robust demand but expressed concerns about potential passenger taxes aimed at cutting emissions, which could undermine the sector’s efficiency gains.

Regional Overview: Different regions reported varied growth rates:

Asia Pacific led with a 12.7% increase in passenger demand and a 9.7% rise in capacity, pushing the load factor up by 2.2 percentage points to 84.1%.
Europe showed a 7.9% rise in demand with a 6.5% increase in capacity, and a load factor improvement of 1.1 percentage points to 86.2%.
Latin America reported a 7.0% increase in demand and a 7.5% rise in capacity, although the load factor slightly dipped by 0.4 percentage points to 84.5%.
Middle East carriers recorded a modest 2.5% rise in demand and a 2.7% increase in capacity, with a marginal decrease in load factor.
North America saw a marginal 0.3% rise in demand, with a 1.6% increase in capacity, leading to a 1.1 percentage point drop in load factor to 83.2%.
Africa experienced a significant 9.3% boost in demand and a 5.2% increase in capacity, resulting in a substantial 2.8 percentage point rise in load factor to 73.8%.

Domestic Markets: The U.S. domestic market saw a slight decline of 1.2% in demand, even with increased capacity. Conversely, China’s domestic sector continued its robust growth, with a 9.7% rise in demand, attributed to more frequent use of wide-body aircraft.
International Sectors: The Asia-Pacific region saw notable strength in international traffic, especially from China. Latin American airlines also experienced significant international growth, with demand up by 10.9%. However, Middle Eastern and North American carriers reported slower growth in their international sectors.
European Growth: Demand within the intra-European international market grew by 8.7%, exceeding pre-pandemic levels, driven by strong demand across Eastern and Western Europe.
