Accra’s New Trade Fair Convention Centre Set to Revolutionize MICE Industry

 Tuesday, June 24, 2025

Ghana is poised to revolutionize its Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector with the upcoming Ghana Trade Fair Convention Centre, set to open its doors in September 2025. Located in Labadi, Accra, this state-of-the-art facility is designed to position the city as a premier destination for international events and trade shows.

A Vision Realized: From Nkrumah to Bawumia

The inception of the Ghana Trade Fair Convention Centre traces back to the vision of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who envisioned a major convention facility as part of his development plan in the 1960s. Decades later, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “For a very long time, government after government has not been able to execute this particular project.” The completion of this center marks the fulfillment of a long-standing national ambition.

Infrastructure and Design: A Modern Marvel

The convention center boasts a seating capacity of 20,000, making it one of the largest in the West African sub-region. This expansive space dwarfs Ghana’s existing venues, which typically accommodate fewer than 3,000 attendees. The facility will feature a multi-purpose event hall, a 5,000-square-meter pre-event lobby, restaurants, gift shops, lounges, and a retail mall. Additionally, the site will house a hotel, data center, and the permanent secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), solidifying Ghana’s status as a regional trade hub.

Vice President Bawumia commended the project’s progress during a site visit, noting the advanced state of construction and the installation of essential services such as roads, fiber optic cables, water, and electricity. He expressed confidence that the project would be completed on schedule, stating, “In the next 8 months this project will be completed, and we are going to hold them to it.”

Economic Implications: Boosting Tourism and the Creative Arts

The establishment of the Ghana Trade Fair Convention Centre is expected to have a profound impact on the nation’s economy. By providing a world-class venue for international conferences and exhibitions, Ghana aims to attract global events, thereby boosting tourism and the creative arts sectors. The center’s capacity to host large-scale events will reduce the cost per attendee, making events more accessible and encouraging higher participation rates.

Furthermore, the center’s strategic location in Accra, home to the AfCFTA Secretariat, enhances Ghana’s appeal as a destination for international business and trade events. The synergy between the convention center and the AfCFTA Secretariat is expected to foster increased collaboration and economic growth within the region.

Looking Ahead: A New Era for MICE in Ghana

With the completion of the Ghana Trade Fair Convention Centre, Accra is set to become a leading destination for MICE tourism in Africa. The facility’s modern amenities, strategic location, and capacity to host large-scale events position Ghana as a competitive player in the global events industry. As the center prepares to open its doors in September 2025, stakeholders across the tourism, trade, and creative arts sectors eagerly anticipate the opportunities it will bring to the nation.
